My work has asked me to move offices. No way I'd consider commuting longer term, Wigan to Leeds is not fun. Currently considering areas between, say, Ilkley to Harrogate. Generally my days will be commuting into Leeds. However, on average I'll spend at least one day per week in either Manchester, Birmingham, London or abroad.

I'm driving over with SWMBO to look at areas this weekend and finally make our mind up on the move. Any other suggestions, please? Preference is generally a nice area, out of the city so access to countryside. My preference is North Yorkshire. Prices seem frightening though. Ilkley:eek: Alternative is to rent for a while whilst the housing market sorts itself out. Would rather settle down in our own house if possible though, but don't want to make a huge mistake.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey dude, I live in a wee village just outside York, and Reckon York is where it's at....I used to commute to leeds every day, although I don't any more it is a piece of pee. 30mins to 45mins if you are in the car....(I did do it in 12 mins on my old GSXR...but that is an old I am bad story...)

York and the surrounding villages have a nice feel about them more tourist orientated so tends to be a bit cleaner, lower crime (On the surface...you can find it if you go looking) etc....imho.

Good luck.

Whetherby is quite nice, its on the A1 and half way between Leeds and York

Thanks fellas, I'll include York and surrounding area in the trip tomorrow. 9 o'clock kick off. I want to include Masham too. Too far north to consider I reckon, but I'm a Yorkshireman by birth: born in Harrogate and lived in Masham as a wee boy before moving to Lancashire with my family of Lancastrians.

Thanks again :thumb2

Don't forget West Yorkshire

Out by Holmfirth and the surrounding areas, especially if you need to get to Manchester. Apart from a few winter days you have the amazing Woodhead pass run, cuts the M62 route by half the time.

I live in the next village from Holmfirth and the roads are pretty damn good with access to the Pennines, Derbryshire, inc Cat & Fiddle.

I commute into Leeds everyday, and its 30-40 min up the M1 on a bad day

What a day to be out and about! Rain, rain and more rain. We could barely see through the windscreen at times, nevermind trying to gauge the look and feel of the places we drove through. Certainly wasn't conducive to walking around too!

First thoughts:

Skipton - great high street, nice feel, poss' a bit too far from Leeds though
Ilkley - very nice, ticks all boxes
Otley - seemed OK, that's about it
Harrogate - lovely, but possibly too far for SWMBO to pop back and see family
York - certainly too far
Places in between - mixed bag
South of M62 - lots going for it, but North of the M62 just 'feels' better (must be like a London north or south of the river thing - I was always north)

Looks like a year or so renting in Ilkley to start with.

pontefract area, some nice villages, council tax cheaper, cheapest houses in yorkshire, about 15mins to leeds

Any luck with your airhead hunt Will(get your priorities right).See one on Ebay but getting expensive.I know its nothing to do with Leeds sorry:nenau

Hi Big Jets

No, it's kind of put everything on hold. I was asked this week, and need to give my decision next week. Everything feels like it's turned up side down. We've only been in this house for three years after a previous move with work fell through and we'd sold our previous house:blast

I know what you mean about priorities, but my word is moving expensive! As if I hadn't gotten enough on with work as it was, and now this. Sheeesh!

Oops, kind a strayed off topic there:augie Just feel a bit pressured with it all.

An 80g/s will come my way one day, just might now be a little later than I'd hoped (you never know though:green gri).

Skipton - try looking at the train times from here to Leeds. Not too bad if I recall.
Ilkley - Very nice but ££££££££££££ Rent, don't buy. Not in this market.
Otley - not as ££££££ as Ilkley but I'd still rent.
Harrogate - As the above.
South of M62 - Aahh, my territory :thumb2 For commuting to Leeds and trips to Wigan, no problem. I live <5mins from the M62/M1 intersection. Prices much better round here. There are some nice places in between the bigger towns. Try WF3 postcodes in searches and the Wakefield area. On the downside, you're further away from the Yorkshire Dales but wherever you choose will be a compromise. I'd stil rent for six months as you watch house prices drop :augie

What about East of Leeds--Garforth, Selby, Sherburn? easy for Squires and Motorways A1 M62 M1 etc

Neil
