I've been doing a little maintenance (thorough clean of the calipers). when getting to ythe final bleed stage I find the rear nipple is like this and im convinced it is going to sheer off.

im going to buy a spare before I come back to this job but when I do come to get it out, any tips from those who've done this before. should I get some heat onto it? should I go for the larger, surrounding nut? Oh, I've already flooded it with WD40 in the hope it will give me a headstart.

thanks

WD40 is not the right stuff for the job and should be kept away from brakes, try some proper penetrating fluid. Clean around the threads first with a wire brush. Apply your penetrating product. I found Wurth Rostoff ,which has a freezing agent in it, the best -the idea being to create tiny gaps to allow the fluid through. A few gentle taps with a copper faced mallet and spray again. Always use a hexagonal tool to avoid rounding and work it both ways -undue a little, tighten, undue. Use more fluid as you work. If you use heat keep it localised to avoid damage. Remember that discretion is the better part of valour so if you don't need to remove the nipple right now give it time and repeated applications of fluid.
Good luck.

Mine was like that, a bit of heat then a short sharp tap square on the nipple and it came out.

I used a 6 sided socket rather than a 12 sided spanner, came out a treat.

When I did mine

I obtained the nut and bleed screw and replaced the pins

All in stainless from Shaw Stainless

As per Warmsheds link above

BM dont supply the large nut and bleedscrew :blast

Thanks for the advice everyone. All very useful. As you can guess, i'm trying to get it out with the least possible fuss!

I think the stainless replacements sounds like a good route, as does the right oil (Understood about WD40, all i have to hand and applied very carefully, wrapped the nipple in a cloth before spraying) and then a few taps with copper hammer and some heat if needed.

Oh, agreed the retaining pin looks dodgy but it's not as bad as the image suggests. It has had a good clean and rub down and there are no notches in it. Saying all that, i have stainless on the front so perhaps time to change...

Just checked Motorworks. 24 quid for both parts, in stainless. Seems a lot but will avoid the same fun next time the job comes around....
