My 2005 GS broke down (engine would turn over but wouldn't fire, dash display all ok, and yes, petrol in the tank) when riding home from the dealers following gearbox seal replacement, and I pushed it the rest of the way home (2.5 miles - hernia is ok, thank you).

After extensive head scratching by the technicians at Wollastons, Northampton, it was traced to a sheared pin that holds the sensor on the end of the crankshaft. What are the chances of that happening!? Steve at Wollastons reports that he's not come across anything like it in 14 years. Bizarre coincidence that it should go when it did - glad I didn't blame the guys at Wollastons!

I'm hoping BMW will look kindly on me, having done so already with the gearbox seals (three months out of warranty, 12,300 miles on clock).

Anyone else heard of this sort of failure before?
