JB & Ikkje do the WAW - June 25

The Burren and Dingle peninsula are lovely. We found the ring of Kerry a bit crowded with cars after the solitude of the other two. Its surprising how quickly you get used to the laid back ways of the locals.

Yesterday we rode across from Bantry to Athy, in Co Kildare (SW of Dublin)
Crossing through some of the mid-lands of Co Cork and Tipperary & Laois
Great coffee stop at a wee village east of Mallow at Mulvey’s - old fashioned spot & note the Fraser’s bar/undertakers across the square (reminiscent of Dad’s army)

We had lunch at Cashel, a lovely town, with a distinct ‘French feel’ and went posh, dining outside at Mikey’s bar and part of the Palace Hotel

Delicious it was too

Very warm yesterday and glad to arrive at Athy (birthplace of Ernest Shackleton) and famous for the malt mills that supply Guinness

Found a great traditional grocery store and bar - O’Brien’s - hadn’t changed much in 150 years and had a great night in there (punctuated by food in the Italian 🇮🇹 restaurant up the street)

Some real characters in the bar and all friendly

Shame the revamped museum isn't open yet. The old one was well worth visiting if you had an interest in The Boss. Looking forward to visiting the new one.

I'm only about 15 minutes from Athy & could have offered youse a bed....

Bugger
The accommodation in Athy wasn’t up to much either
We left at 7.29am and we were at Wicklow Gap before 8.30am to catch the cool morning, before it got too hot (there’s a thing for Ireland 🇮🇪….too hot ….who’d have thought it)

Not up to much JB? That has to be the understatement of the trip as it was minging.

I’ve been navigating for 95% but JB took over for the last 10m today. His favourite Garmin 2610 (bmw version) clearly had the unique ‘housing estate’ feature enabled 🤣 Perhaps it was so he could ogle the district nurse we nesrly ran over half way round!

The place we’re staying in Saintfield is in contrast great, with a lovely owner who offered us free coffee and cake in her coffee shop both when we arrived and in the morning.

I’ll leave pictures up to the trip report maestro!

Cracking last day in Ireland 🇮🇪

Left Athy at 7.29am (accommodation was poor - dirty and noisy & no curtains, so we were up early)
Best thing was the pet rabbit !

We were at Wicklow gap by 8.30 am and then did Sally Gap in short order

Cashel rings a bell with me, 1978 I took my brand new 400F round Ireland with a mate on the back and camping gear on a search for the best pint of Guinness. Another mate came along on his Z200
We all agreed that it was in a pub in Cashel.
About time I did another lap.
