An Update

So, after a great day yesterday, the weather was in the teens here so off I went for a ride.

As I come out of a tunnel on the final approach to the Tobin Bridge I hit a bump and suddenly hear a bang that sounds like a pannier being kicked. I then realised that the rHS pannier had come off in the middle of a 4 lane road and I had nowhere to stop.

Finally finding a spot to stop some 1/4 miles away, I see the pannier sitting in the middle of the ROAD

I run back, cars are going all over the place, and the pannier is being avoided!! phew.

Seriously lucky a truck driver realises the issue, stops the cab and all the traffic.

I recover the pannier and leave my power pump and attachments in bits on the road.

I have no idea how it came off the bike, it was locked on to the frame and I did over 250 miles on them yesterday, I just don't know how it happened....but hopefully will find out before they go back on. Luckily no one or anything was damaged, I can't believe that it just detached, I have had 2 sets of this stuff and it is very good equipment.

Pannier now looks like this:

Was it your fault or a product failure?

Mention this site and tell them this will be very bad publicity for them if they don't fix or replace them as a good will gesture.

Stick it on ADV rider and you might worry them but I can't see em being bothered about us lot

There has been a fairly vigorous debate on the quality issues of Jesse stuff there recently.

It got a bit heated IIRC.

Not sure on blame

I don't know who to blame, I know that the units where locked shut as I put the bike pump in there this morning and remember them being closed.

I am chatting with Neil and Al at Jesse Luggage at the moment and we are trying to figure it out, I think I have a theory which I am going to try with the other one this evening, these boxes are a few years old, so I am trying to see if aging of parts has anything to do with it.

The box is bust, Al thinks he could fix it, but could be sure as it is twisted and buckled badly.

Check the attachments guys, these don't like boucing down the road at 60. I'll let you guys know as I find out.

Thanks for the heads up Nick.
Do you think it could be something to do with the rubber pressure rings that push against the 'U' shaped recess when you lock them. Has the rubber perished or has it more give than usual? I have these panniers and I'm very pleased with them. I think these rubber 'O' rings are probably the weak link. Will keep an eye on them more closely just to be on the safe side.
Let us know what conclusions you come up with.

So was it like what you see in the films then? Cars sliding sideways down the road and then hit by the flying car that just barrel rolled 15 times, cardbord boxes, water melons everywhere, 18 wheelers jack knifing just missing the woman crossing the road with a pram, escaped convicts running from the overturned prison bus before it explodes in flames, 2 glazing firm employees trying to carry a pane of glass across the road and of course not forgetting the bloke putting up the County Fair banner using the 20 foot step ladders?

I went and made some coffee, just so i could spit it over the keyboard as i read Lolgeoffs image of Nicks close escape - A absolute gem . That's set me up for the day.

After thinking about it a lot and speaking with jesse, I tried a theory last night with the other pannier and I think this is the problem.

On the night before it falling off, I put the bike on the centre stand, as I was doing it, the pannier (the one that fell off) clipped the wall just ever so slightly. I moved the bike forward to increase clearance and then put the bike on the stand. What I think happened and is the only clue I have is that the box holder came out of the recess on the bracket ever so slightly. The bump I went over was pretty big so I think with the bracket not engaged correctly was the reason it jumped out of the holding.

The box is a write off, I spoke with Jesse yesterday and they are arranging a replacement LHS box for me. One of the reasons I think the damage was so bad was the box was empty, therefore is bounced a lot and may of clipped a Semi truck, not sure.

Human error costs$$$$. Check those box clips guys, I was lucky it didn't bounce into a large amount of traffic......
