Got a few jobs done on my 2001 1150gs (fuel filter, heated grips repair, throttle cable box lube, brake pads checked etc) While removing the brake pads the pistons wouldn't go back in the calipers on the front, they where free to move as when you squeezed one, the other of the pair would move out so they are free. I don't think they need to be screwed back in like some cars?. Now the bike is back on the road the front brake is very stiff with only a small amount of travel, there also doesn't feel like there is any power to the brakes? Any ideas ?:nenau

Did you open master cylinder cap ?
If you replace pads might be to much fluid.

just for your piece of mind mate ,i cant think of any bike that has wind back pistons, they are on cars to operate the hand brake :thumb

master cylinder cap was off and fluid at about half way, dont think it is servo just abs. Just doing them now with vac pump but open caliper bleed nipple and brake lever is still stiff with nothing coming out of nipple??? Is the fluid from lever to abs unit then abs unit to caliper actually the same ie linked?

undone right side caliper bleed nipple and brake lever pulls as normal and fluid comes out of bleed nipple??

funnily enough I was just thinking that!! in process of taking the left (good) caliper off and making sure the right one actually moves when you pull the lever, could be the old hoses have collapsed on that side !

Er.....remember when I had to let the fluid out of the left caliper to get the pads back....they are still there ie away from the disk.....I have ridden 40 miles today!! I will have a go at removing the last bit of hose to the caliper to see what blocked.

On another note I lubed the cable splitter box with dry moly spray..should be OK?

Whats peoples options with hoses? Look like I only need the piece from the metal cross pipe down to the caliper, there is a good bulge in the hose at the banjo bolt, guess this is where it has collapsed. Do you go to a sportsbike style two hoses from the joint under the tank to each caliper or from the tank to RH caliper then across to LH caliper thus eliminate the metal cross pipe?

Motorworks and the like do kits which will have all the lines you need. You don't replace any of the solid lines - only the flexible rubber hoses.

Hth.

How come they are so damn expensive? Put hel lines on my sports bikes over the years for about a third of what bmw lines cost?

Don't just replace one, replace all rubber brake lines, please. It is a safety issue, they could kill you if you have a blockage at 100km/h

One of mine went a couple of years ago at 20km/hr and right side calliper locked up and brought me to a sudden stop with the car behind swerving around me just leaving a faint graze on my guard.

Will be going for the full kit! If one has gone then other lines will follow. Just looking round for prices. Looks like there are options to keep the solid crossover line or replace with hose.

Had Similar and.......

A lucky escape on my 1100 ABS

Fitted stainless Goodridge hoses .was a doddle to fit
all you need in the kit.
Brakes a lot firmer wouldn,t go back to rubber hoses.

There must be a lot of these older bikes out there on the original Hoses far over their sell by date, scary stuff

does anybody have the torque settings for the banjo bolts on the calipers and at the ABS pipes as I am fitting the new hoses tonight (another excellent service from motorworks sending a goodridge stainless kit so quickly). Cheers
