Little help for Errol & Brian?

Hi Aiden, Neil here. Gotta a quick message from Errol and Brian tonight (thur). It seems that a few technical diffs are going to truncate their journey. That and fuel problems. Errols bike has kissed the dirt (again!!) and he informs me that he has broken the left hand side throttle position switch (it's in pieces!!). I have no great familiarity with this particular item but it appears that it is causing problems. They hope to be in Morocco either Fri or Sat and need to trace a BMW agent in southern Spain who may be able to help. Firstly can you help identify this particular component and secondly have you or yours any knowledge of a user friendly dealer in that part of the world. They are both O.K. but I fear a tad 'battle weary'!!!!!

Hi Aiden and thanks for the quick reply. I can find the main dealer in Madrid that's not a problem. I do not know, however, how well or badly the bike is running. The description is very vague but I shall contact Hursts in the morn and hopefully find someone who can offer guidance. I do not even have their intended route at this moment but I'm sure that will follow in due course. I know they have had a very hard day so I hope that a good night of sleep will make for a more coherent conversation in the morn!!!!

Here is the exploded diagram for the R1200GS throttle bodies and the Throttle Position Sensor. This is for late 2004 model. If there have been any part number changes after then this number may not be correct!!

I have got a hooky copy of the BMW ETK (the old parts system) that has the 1200GS up to Dec 2004. I got it from someone on FleaBay for under a fiver. The new system is online I believe so ripping it orf is not so easy

Guys,

We managed to get out of Mauritania today and have got ourselves back to Dakhla. We need another 3-4 days of riding to hit the north tip of Africa. The bike is running very rich and the back of the bike is black from the soot.

We are losing 50 miles on the tank range now but we know what petrol stations there will be as we just came down this way recently. The bikes are still running on leaded petrol. Hopefully two more days will see that finish.

We are limping the bike back to Spain as it looks the more sensible option as Mauritania looked like the end of the earth and we were not prepared to stay for a week to wait on a part. It lloks like Hursts, Duffys et al would have to order the part in so we would have to wait for that and then wait for it to arrive here. We are hoping that the bike makes it to Southern Spain as really I think we are out of options.

How it happened...
Yesterday we left Dakhla and and a bit of a nervous trip down to the border as there were no petrol stations. We reached one when I was close to being out of fuel. We had travelled at 60 mph to conserve fuel. We filled up and 70 miles later we were at the border. Morrocan but was fine no problems. Then we had to cross 'no mans land', 3 km of nothing. No signs, no road, no indication if you were going the right way. There are people who live in no mans land and use it as a place to swap car registrations for tax purposes. It is supposedly controlled by the UN and there are land mines. Well, guess what? I hit the first dune and the weight of the bike was too much for me to control the sand and down she went on her right hand side. First impressions were that she was OK but you can imagine how I felt when I saw the other side. My boot had caught the only bit that was sticking out....the throttle position switch! Broke it off completely.

Some of the 'people' appeared out of the dunes and kindly offered to tow me the 2 clicks for €70! I felt so helpless and we knew that the border was closing soon and if we didn't think fast we would be in major trouble with these people.

I waved down the next jeep that we saw. Turned out to be a German couple from the Black Forest. He was a bike mechanic. He couldn't fix it but offered to tow the bike to the Mauritanian border. Slowly, we got the bike to the border and subsequently faced the guards. Not a pleasant situation...they outwardly asked for 'presents' and were not too happy with what we gave them. We lied and told them that the German couple had taken our money in return for the tow... that worked at the first hut but we had another 2 to go. 2nd hut was OK. 3rd hut was a nightmare. I stayed on the bike to keep it running as the battery had started to go flat earlier with all the starts. They knew something was wrong with the bike and in the end let us go as they were getting frustrated with us. They told us that we would see him on our return and would not get out of the country without paying him. Great start to Mauritania heh?

We rode to Nouadhibou. Some of the road was sand dunes and other bits, the crosswinds made it look like the road was pure sand which made us a bit wary when riding. Reached Nouadhibou...what a shithole! I have never seen anything like it in my life. We found a 'hotel' and I decided to tell Brian that I felt that I was out of the Dakar run now due to the last few hours. Nouadhibou and the earlier incident made me realise how far away I was from real help for the problem. If we went any further we could be in a lot more bother. Surprisingly he agreed to go back with me in the morning when the border reopened.

Didn't need any help getting out of bed this morning! Reached the border at 9.30. I lied through my teeth that we had slept rough last night and that we had no money. We got away with that at the hut we dreaded! Hut 2 was fine again and Hut 3 rememberd the presents we gave them yesterday and let us go. Went through no mans land at a snails pace and then negotiated the 4 parts of the stop to get into Morocco with ease.

Watched the petrol situation like a hawk. She is running rich and the tank range is reduced by 50 miles we think.

I am writing this from the Sahara Regency Hotel in Dakhla. The Minister for Economic Affairs is staying here tonight so there is a lot of commotion...so much so, no one has noticed that whilst typing on my laptop, I have unplugged their internet connection and have plugged it in here!

Symptoms.
The bike is running like a dog in idle. The slightest touch of the throttle and she cuts out. However, put the clutch in and she allows you to rev her! Very weird. She will run ok but you cant accelerate quickly of she splutters nor can you go down the gears quickly.

The bit that is broken in two has exposed 3 metal connections that are obviously feeding the CPU the data. It is running without this connection but must be in an emergency mode and now guesses the fuel injection needs. I wonder does anyone know what the optimum rev range I should keep the bike at for the next 1000 miles to Spain to keep the burn as correct as possible. 4000 revs 'felt' right today but I am just guessing.


I have attached two photos pointing out the break and the part that I am talking about. In these photos we have simply tried to cable tie it together. Manually touching the parts together never allowed a connection to take place. The cable ties are to keep it out of the way.

Hi Errol

Good to see you back in some, if transient, communication. Talked to Emma tonight about various things!!!!!!!!!! You are a lucky bloke. Rare to find such a lady who will support her fella so much. Keeping my fingers crossed that you can make it to Spain. Ring the numbers supplied (big thanks to the Prof and Schutm - invaluable!!) and with some divine intervention you should get sorted. Had a chat with Jockser as well - real gentleman - nothing too much trouble for that man - they obviously do not know you!!!
Thought back to a few hours spent in my garage preparing the bike - should have known that yer big plates of meat would be a problem! Only fella I know who can trip over a 10mm washer on the floor!!!!!

Wee drop of Redex would sort this problem and don't forget Fred's "Back to Black" the panacea to all ills. James is off to Italy for some sking but I know that he really wants to get rid of the green hue that he has had since you left on this shopping trip!!

Hi Ally - unfortunately I had to turn back towards home when Errol & Brian left Agadir towards the south (with the original intention of making it to Dakar before circumstances intervened ) so I can't comment on stuff south of Agadir but I would have some good routes & interesting places, as well as places & situations to avoid in Morocco. If you want any info for a trip I'd be more that happy to impart some of my (very) limited knowledge. Just PM me or call me on one of the numbers in my earlier post.

With regard to the panniers I would have to say they are excellent - sturdy, spacious & totally water & dust proof. They also take a fair bit of a hammering Also, Civil has been on several times to see that we were happy with them & did we think anything should be changed. Great back-up - which is not always something you can say about suppliers / manufacturers

I spoke to Errol about half an hour ago & they are in Leyounne tonite & back to being pretty upbeat. Errol is revving the bike a bit harder & reckons its running slightly better. They are confident that they can make Ceuta / Algeceras by Monday nite, all being well.

GHOBR seems to have a good line on a replacement part in Malaga & while that will delay them a bit they should make serious progress after that. All things being equal Errol could be home by next weekend. My own moto should be home by then & I might even ride up & meet him off the ferry
