John Deacon Dakar bike

I have just spent over £500 with a good mechanic who gave a full overhaul with fluids, oils, valve clearances, clutch plates, front shock seals, surclips etc etc...I have a comprehensive list but have lost it, he has commented he has never ever come across a machine as well built as this.

Well then you should be able to get a copy of the invoice if your 'good mechanic' is still alive and in business :augie

That bit didn't ring true to me either:D

I have only ridden her less than 500 miles since owning. Sad but I live in London. The original sale was £6500, but I am open to all sensible offers.

500 miles on a race engine means it's about due another rebuild :rob

I thought John had only ridden BMWs in the Dakar:confused:

Are the Ralley bike engines even tuned?

I remember reading somewhere that the BMW singles were stock motors for reliability rather than performance

Well go on then tell me how long a race engine was used on a factory bike? :augie

KTM 660 Rallye, number 146 in the 2007 Dakar and piloted to 18th place is still on the same engine and good to do the Dakar again, no rattles or oil burning - :comfort

That must make it a very affordable motorsport then. :blast

Hi I'm seriously considering this bike, any advice on using this as a longish distance off road touring bike, plans of travelling to North Africa and Eastern Europe, I've been looking at adventures and the new 660 tendered.
Thanks dj

i think theres a whole load of bikes better suited for your needs for half the money.
personally id rather have electric start , lower maintenance , better luggage options along and a bit more comfort ??

xt660r ? :thumb

i cant see myself keeping a xt660 for a long time, thought it might also be an investment

I've had both an xt 660r and a ktm 640 adventure and id rather the yamaha for various reasons . it might well be an investment if thats what your after as long as theres lots of proof as to it being the real deal.

I have a 98 xtz 660 which I have used on trips over to Morocco and Tunisia. I have spent other peoples time and my money doing it up. Due to circumstances I bought a KTM 640 for a trip over to Turkey last year. The bike had already done 45k trip through south america. My turkey trip covered 6k in 18 days with motorway across Europe then a fair mixture of everything else once in Turkey.

Getting to the point

Doing 80mph on road was painful on full days, vibrations are harsh and I felt fully violated. On the back roads doing 60- 70 I had no more issues than with my xtz, off road oh yes big smiles and would of left the xtz eating dirt.

Now to gloat a little with ride reports

The 45k south American trip the KTM had previously done
