Planning a tour of Scotland for next year, is John o'Groats worth a detour..? or is it as tacky as Lands End..?

Fank Yoo.

erm well there's a tea shop, a small roundabout that's about it, there's a funny looking hotel it's shut/ falling down and a petrol station 1 mile up't road.

the roads leading away from it are well good....!

Give it a miss, I think. :eek

The Stacs of Duncansby can be worthwhile, if you want to blow the cobwebs out, but otherwise - Caithness should be viewed as a transit area to and from Orkney......

The north coast is worth a run, as is a run down Strath Hallidale or Strath Naver, down to Lairg and beyond.

Al :)

if you find any side panels for a C90 can you pick'em up they probably belong to me.

been there, and thought it was the Sheep Shit capital of the UK. Not really much there aprt from SheepShit, Oh and .... sheep.

Nice views, but not outstanding and there are better views in other areas of Scotland.

I also thought that the coast on the north Eastern run up to JoG just hadn't been coloured in. (I think that even Slartybartfast must have got bored after completing the Fjords)

Having said that the run across the top of scotland (beyond JoG) and down the west coast was fabulous. Also the run from North West to Inverness was pretty good (nice and remote, single track with passing places. I couldn't believe it was a major route - it may have been updated although I hope not)

So I wouldn't rule it out, but don't expect too much

Cheers

If you are panning to head north of Inverness, head for Ullapool along the A835. Particularly past Loch Glascarnoch. There is a reasonably pub at the east end of the loch below the dam. After that head south towards Gairloch to Achnasheen. Suberb roads all the way with flat out bits and some single track thrown in for the fun of it. There is another good tea room at Achnasheen.

I could go on but thats enough for now!! :thumb

Feckoffthelottayouse!

A9 From Golspie up to John O'Groats is a pretty damn decent road.

JOG itself is a very small place, just a few houses, couple of caffs and tourist shops. It's worth going, just to say you've been there and grab a coffee.

If you're expecting MickeyDuckLand and performing Killer Whales...go to Florida....our Killer Whales don't do stunts for the grockles.:D

JOG has never claimed to be the most Northerly point.
That's an ill-informed myth bandied about by people who know no different. Something anyone who lives in JOG will be quick to point out to you if you ask.
That honour goes to Dunnet Head a few miles West. JOG has always been the traditional finishing point from Lands End - this dates back to at least the 1930's. Simply because there was a convenient settlement and ferry point already there.

Get there on a good day and the views across the Pentland Firth are stunning, it's a pity most people don't have the time to explore the backroads in Caithness. It's certainly a good part of the world to own a GS.:thumb

On the 'popularity' front...there's a bike rally takes place every year in Groats. They don't have to advertise as it is always fully booked in advance by bikers who come back year after year...draw your own conclusions from that....:D

Sleepy, if you do make it up here, give me a shout beforehand and I'll try to show you around if you want.

...and if you go into the white shop on the right hand side of the second photie - you'll be in the 'Last House' shop and museum.

If you are served by a small, slim, dark haired woman who seems determined to squeeze every last penny out of you....you have just met Mrs Klanky.:D

Be afraid....she scares me.

If yer ehading north, you should still visit JoG. It is the furthest point fomr that other place in Englandshire...er....something End. There is maybe not much at JoG but at least Peter de Savery hasn't set up gaming machines and other crap.

You could always nip down to the foreshore and collect a bag of "Groatie-buckies".................. That's about as good as it gets :augie

If you are planning on spending a night in Wick...................................

Wear a gumshield :rob
