John o'Groats..?

I'm going back up in mid to late august for a looky cos I need to do just abit of research on next years C90 run.

Plus I need to do applecross...

While the north coast is nice, with some stunning beaches (away from Dounreay, of course.............. :eek) - I'd be loathe to recommend a trip to J'OG just to say you'd been there............... :(

Having spent 12 years in Caithness, you come to recognise it has it own unique values, that make it different to the rest of the UK.

Ok JoG is not the be all destination, but it is certainly part of the journey if you are serious about exploring the north of the UK.

The road called the causeway mire is through the Flow Country, a peat desolation but probably has the fastest road anywhere in the UK.:augie
Not your cup of tea then as Klanky said the coast road up from Sutherland to Caithness is a gem on a m/bike.:thumb

Then the bimble across the North coast road to Tounge and beyond round to Laxford Bridge etc, or if you are in the mile racking up league (and with a BMW would expect so) then up and down the "strath roads" eg one highlighted already on the preceeding map. These strath roads are again in an amazing remote area, well worth the experience.
I used to winter walk in these areas and was with the Mount Assynt Rescue team, there are some of the finest hills / mountains in Scotland up there.

If you have your drinking head on then go to Thurso on a Friday night, and see what it means to have a few drinks.

No I am not with the Caithness Tourist Board. but if you have made it up to Inverness you be mad not to take the opportunity to explore the next 120 miles north of inversnecky.
My contribution over.:rob

JOG

Just back from a run to Orkney. From the Scrabster ferry I went to Dunnet head which was well worth seeing and enjoyed the road up to it as well. Couldn't not go to JOG to see what it was all about and even gave Klanky Plc a bit of business by previous accounts. Wick to Inveness was nice and fast when the sun came out but couldn't hold a candle to the west coast.

A must

Was at JOG yesterday for the first time:thumb2

My recommendation is to aim to arrive just before 5pm, get your photos of the sign post then sit back and wait for the funniest thing ever witnessed......

After five the famous signpost for john o groats is dismantelled and turned into a white stick. Imagine driving all that way to get the famous JOG signpost picture and its not there:jes

I thought the man taking it down was going to be lynched

Felt sorry for all them people in a kind of total wipeout way but it gave us a laugh:augie

Yup, it's quite funny to see peoples' faces when he does it. Indignation is putting it mildly.:D

Sadly, the reason why they take it down is that over the past few years the sign has been vandalised or stolen on more than a couple of occasions.
The lads used to leave it out overnight so people could still get their photies, but seeing as it is a private business venture (the same company owns the site at L.E), they got fecked off with forking out for signs and losing business. So down it comes every night.

And funnily enough, having met him in a motorway service station on the M1 the other day, I have to say I agree with you. :thumb

That was my cheerful twin brother, David.
I, on the other hand, am a complete twat.:thumb2

My mate wanted to go there when we were up the other week but the closest we got was a sign for 111 miles somewhere north of Inverness. I wasn't keen after seeing the posts here but my mate has a point in "just to say you have been there" so next trip will make the effort.
