July 8 XP SP2 update and Zone Alarm = no internet access

Guys, thought I'd post this here & in the pc section to stop anyone else having a mare of a day.

I turned my pc & laptop on having arrived back home and let it update AVG etc.

Windows downloaded an update for XP (pro) and I went through the manual process of installing it.

Restarted pc & laptop as required (AVG needed it too) & all of a sudden, no internet access whatsoever.

So. If you use zone alarm, don't do the windows update yet!

Zone Alarm are aware of this and investigating.

If you do, you need to uninstall one of the windows update files, for IE I think, click here for more

Temporary fix is to reduce the setting in the Firewall - internet zone from High to MEDIUM

Or just remove the windows update as above - which is what I've preferred to do, and keep the firewall setting at high

I had same problem as you. I came on here to post about it but you beat me to it.:P I did as the forum suggested BUT now every 5 mins or so the update reappears. I did go to system restore and went back to to yesterday. I cancelled the update when i was offered it again but it downloaded itself anyway.

now i am getting the message to restart my computer as updates need to be installed.:thedummy

I may do as suggested by Billn but like you I would prefer not to.

It is a temporary fix.......do it until they sort it out...........leave the Windows update as is and ZA will sort it at the next update otherwise they will go out of business
 
Its exactly the same in WIN2K (which is where WINXP came from) but not (according to the Microsoft help link you get with this nightmare) with Vista. I run WIN2K/SP4 and the latest free ZoneAlarm (downloaded April this year). The symptom I had was that ZA was blocking TELNET Internet accesses that I did'nt expect to be happening. I half suspect that part of the problem is that Microsoft are trying to report something back and ZA is doing its job in stopping it.

Does anyone know if 192.168.1.1 is part of Microsoft's domain?. Something from there keeps being thrown out by ZA ever since I tried to run WINXP update from here on a computer that is now scrapped.

192.168.1.1 is generally an 'internal' IP address, it is most likely your own PC or maybe your router ;)
 
as said 192.168.1.1 is usually the default router IP address for the internal network, try running IPCONFIG from a dos/command prompt, if the address listed is the default gateway one then its your router.
question? is your pc trying to telnet to 192.etc or is 192.etc trying to telnet to your pc? both are odd, unusual behaviour.

Fiddled about ran through BT Broadband Desktop help, was dreading phoning them up.

Then remembered that there was a computor help bit on here.

Reduced the Firewall from high to medium - bobs your aunt, fanny's your uncle, all fixed.

I've just read through that article and this bit confuses me a little:

Why only keep the technical details secret for another month? Would it not make more sense to keep the details secret forever?



On another note, it seems that Zone Labs have released an update to resolve this issue. Visit HERE for the update
 
Has anyone tried the latest ZoneAlarm yet?. It doesn't want to install under WIN2K. As regards my query regarding 192.168.1.1, it's NETBIOS (i.e. part of Windows) that wants to write to the Internet.
 
Looks like ZoneAlarm needs to be installed with internet access open. Now running WIK2K/SP4 with KB951748 and ZoneAlarm. Seems OK for now.
