Hey up
I read a thread on jump leads for bikes on tuther forum
thought I would share this with the lads that help me most
I got some cable of a electrical mate - it is 5mm OD inc.insulation and has 10AWG 1015 105c 600v on side wall
Cut it off at 1300mm length
Got missis's trousers coathangers out of wardrobe and nicked the small croc clips off um
Drilled 5mm holes in clips attatched holed terminals to end of cables and soldered um on - bolted um up rolled um up and put um in a bag which fitd lovely on top of airbox - done 8000 km without loosing um
Used um on bike to bike and for starting me own when batt was left for a long time with a spare car batt I have in shed
They were that easy to make and use I made some to go in me off road bag on XT and there is a set traveling around Turkey at mo on Archies PD
They have also got Jaber back in the shit when he was no going in any
( stuck no power off roading ) they have started a 1200 as well
and No Janet has no more clips left in the wardrobes, before you ask
Tarka or another expert will no doubt give proper disription of the cable soon

HTHY
Mick

Nice one :thumb2

Done the same sort of thing myself but not having any coat hanger croc clips, went to Maplin where they have the next best thing. Croc clips rated at 30 Amps with red or black insulation, so less chance of shorting things out. I know 30 Amps is not really enough but they work OK as a boost to the flat battery

don't want to piss on your chips but they look a little small to me.

10swg is 3mm, not really up to it. - plus 1mm for the insulation makes 5mm

600V is the insulation breakdown voltage.

they will probably work in an emergency, buy i think you'll be seeing a reasonable volt drop and a bit of heat if you had to start a completely dead bike.

still, better than nothing if they work once :thumb

Would it be worth arranging the cables to be of unequal length so that there is less chance of an accidental short - or even a suitable in-line fuse?

Well bugger me
You get an Idea and everyone starts making um
I made mine in 1066 just for the historians out there
I haddnt seen them - I was more interested in making a small set with titchy clips that dont earth out like some jump leads that I could stash somewhere on bike easy

Another trick I learnt at the Dutch GS doo ( from a lad called Mark ) was if yer bumping a bike and there is anything left in the battery press the start button just as you bump it helps to turn engine over easier
and it did for my pals bike - I thought that a good tip to share also

just thought i would post it for the members on here who are a little less practical or who would question the use of clips off hangers :eek (brilliant alternative use) would have probably made a set if i didnt have fecking halfrauds vouchers to get rid of :blast:blast

jump leads

Best thing since sliced bread Mick mine ave been up the Himalayas no probs, you really should consider retraining as a proctologist, I think you would reach the top in no time:)

Love and kisses on the bottom xxx

or for £9 from halfords you could get a nice ready made set :augie

I carry a set ot these - with a few 'extras' stuffed into the zip-up cover. They started my K1200GT from my R1150 GSA no bother :thumb2

Useful things to carry around - however you come by them.

(You should see the set I have in the Land Cruiser :augie ).
