Can you jump start a GS with the portable lithium type power packs. I have used one in the past to start a lazy 3L VW touareg, but just wondering if they are compatible/safe with the GS electronics.

I've jump started a R1200RT LC and an F800 with mine. You can also jump start from a vehicle as long as it's not running ie just using the battery as power

Thanks Casbah, what is the significance of the donor vehicle running?

Read somewhere (so not gospel) but apparently if the donor vehicle is running the output from the battery is too much and can cause damage to the Canbus. So I have always done it with my jump starter pack (Mirco start xp)

Got one, used one, worked well, goes in top box if on first trip out in a while.
Also started my dead E350 on Monday after I left the code reader switched on since Saturday

I've used a jump pack a couple of times. Suspect I'll be using it again when the snow thaws....

Used mine today to pick up my new bike.
Worked a treat.
Epic day. Bike was delivered on Monday by courier, but due to the snow, only able to deliver to the local garage in the village. We've had about 12 inches of snow since, but today after the local farmer ploughed the road, there was a window of opportunity when the sun shone.
One mile up hill on packed snow and ice but made it. What a machine.

New bike and you need a jump pack?

Sounds like you need a new battery -

Mines sat for a weekend in -4 and started at the first prod of the button

your lucky,

Been bitten too many times with fubarred battery's

First GS went through 3 before i found a good one,

my second gs only got the chance to non start once, - and i whacked a motobatt in it ;)

shame as i had an oddyssey sitting in the corner - which will fit as it turns out

Yep mines an oddyssey, it was as already fitted to my GSA when I bought it in July 2008. Motobatts on my tls's are doing well too.

2008 is a hexhead - oddysey is an ok fit - the newer LC's need fins on the oddysy trimming to fit and some require the upper battery tray to be taken out as well

pop the cover off and check how dry it is...

at 4.9 years old mine went downhill really fast... in the end couldn't crank the bike at all. knowing a bit of distilled water works wonders on old AGM batteries I thought I pop a few ml in each cell. Revived a 25kg merc AGM battery to as good as new with 60ml per cell, I put a bit in the odyssey and it vanished... in the end each cell took 140ml each !!! and just like the car one, give it 6 months and they come back to life as good as new....

2 years on it cranks the bike like it did when new and holds a charge for 3 months no issue

Been meaning to do this since the last time you mentioned it. Maybe if it gets above freezing one weekend.
