Why has nobody come up with a program / patch to add on to Outlook Express that only lets emails into your account if the senders address is in your addresss book already ? I am using outlook express 6. :nenau :nenau

I'm surprised, spamfighter catches at least 95% of the crap I get sent and I can't remember when the last false call was

Iain

Sorry. Didn't mean to imply that Spamfighter doesn't work. It does and does exactly what it says on the tin. However you still get spam delivered to your email client. You inevitably go into the spam folder to make sure there's nothing there that shouldn't be (so you're looking at all the spam). What I want is some way of stopping it at the mail server and not getting through to me at all.

how? i tried but couldn't find the right condition.

Ok, I found a way of doing it but it means as you add addresses to your address book you have to manually update your list of allowed addresses in your mail rule :(

No worries there, but the only worry one might have is what has never delivered and (presumably) dumped at the server with no means of retrieval.

There are some good algorithms for detecting spam ot there, but none are infallable!

My company's ISP provide something like that and frequently everything gets bounced as spam and we get very quiet, but frustrating, days waiting for an important email that's never going to get through

Tommo, yes sure. You may not need it step by step but I'll do it that way in case anyone else might need it..........

1. In Outlook Express choose Tools->Message Rules->Mail->New

2. Under "Select the Conditions for your rule" tick "Where the From line contains people"

3. Under "Select the Actions for your rule" tick either "Move it to a specified folder" or "Delete it" (depends on what you want to do with these mails. I created a new folder for use when testing it called AAAA_Deleted so that its right up at the top of the tree). You can create a new folder at this point by clicking "New Folder".

4. Under "Rule Description" click contains people then "Address book". You now need to copy all of the addresses to the right hand side under "Rule Addresses". No need to do them one by one, just mark them all by clicking the first one then moving to the last one and shift-click it and then click "From ->" then click "OK"

5. Back at "Select People" click "Options" and change option 1 to "Message does not contain the people below" then click "OK"

6. Back at "Select People" again click "OK"

7. (You only need to do this step if you are moving these mails to a specified folder) Back at "New Mail Rule" scroll all the way down to the bottom of section 3 (Rule Description) and click on specified and choose the folder you want to use and click "OK".

8. Under "Name of the rule" call it what ever you like and then click "OK" then click "OK" to finish.

Now, depending on what you did at 3 above all mail coming to you that has NOT got it's sender's address in your address book will be deleted OR (see 3 above) be directed into the folder you specified in 3 above.

HTH,
Garfieldus
