On the fast ferry from Poole to Cherbourg on Monday 14 July for 5 days mooching about in France.
Not sure where to go, maybe Oradour to look at the village or a bit further SE for some twisties.
Anyone else over there that week, I might see you about

Next time I'm in France Oradour will definitely on my must see list.

Make sure you're bike is fully fuelled before you leave the UK. July 14 is Bastille Day and almost everywhere in France will be shut that day. It may be prudent to pre-book your accommodation just for that first night, then just wing it for the rest of the holiday.

But the card fuel pumps will all be working at the supermarkets and I assume that the motorway services will all be manned.
Make sure that you have a Nationwide debit card to minimise costs when using a card.

I used 2 last week and they worked a treat.

And Oradour is a 'must' at some point.

We went a few years back on the way up from Spain.

And yes, I agree about Oradour, I've yet to visit but hope to later this summer - it's good to remind ourselves of such things.

I went to Oradour in March. it was wet and miserable day and somehow this suited the atmosphere of this sad place.
Here's a few shots which I converted to B&W as I thought it suited the mood.

A couple of general street scenes showing the old tram lines that used to run into Limoges.

The church were the women and children were murdered.

And most sad of all the bakery oven where the body of a baby was found burnt.

Yep I'm looking forward to it, may only be 5 days but it'll be nice to get away.

We went to Oradour a couple of years ago and have recommended it to friends going to that area.
We went in late September and were the only 2 walking around the derelict town - it was extremely eerie and very sobering.

Found the whole visit, the museum, the film show and the old town, very moving.

YES lots of them are multi lingual.
BUY before entering the village as it helps with guidance and translations
Also if you go by Motorhome theres a fantastic free aire just in the New Village.


As has been said before, it is a must see, lest we forget.
The red placards on the massacre sites are worth translating ..

But, to put the events into perspective, I would recommend reading Max Hasting's book, Das Reich (The march of the 2nd SS Panzer division through France, June 1944).

Whilst the book in no way excuses the terrible atrocities dished out on the town (and others) it does explain why it happened.

More and more pumps / filling stations now take UK cards.

They were for me last 2 weeks, especially the 'SUPER U' filling stations, and by that I mean the 24/24 automated ones.

The usual attendant ones on motorways etc take your UK cards as usual.

Just a bit of advice please, as a route does Cherbourg to Angers, follow the river across to Tours and then down to Limoge sticking to D and N rds sound any good? Don't know what that area is like at all.

Take this route :

and then hit the river as soon as poss after Angers,staying on the northside :

Worth taking a detour to Chinon after Saumur very pretty.
