Just bought a tired looking 1200gs. Few quick questions if that's ok?

Most of the fasteners are tarnished - new set of bolts is quite cheap but can anyone tell me if I should use threadlok when replacing them and if so what colour?

The discs are also slightly warped - have been reading on here and people are recommending Steptoes discs. Can anyone tell me how to get in touch with him?

Lastly, one of the cylinder heads is bubbling slightly. Easy to refinish? or should I look for a replacement?

Thanks for any advice received, JD.

Steptoe = www.gsshop.biz

Cylinder head? do you mean rocker cover?

Tarnished bolts...

RED threadlock means its stuck in a lot and you meant it to be.

BLUE means its stuck in a bit because you dont want it to fall out.

COPASLIP means it comes out easy, possibly too easily.

NOTHING means it corrodes, sticks in anyway and shears off when you want to remove it.

You decide what you want to achieve:D

Oh and if youre a torque wrench junkie note that adding a sealant or lubricant then torquing up to the prescribed level will all be well out......MINEFIELD:augie

Thanks, I'll browse the gsshop now.

I do mean the rocker cover - any ideas?

I reckon I'll go with Blue threadlok. Don't want them all falling out while riding.

Cheers, JD

Post a picture of the new steed it may be my old one

If you mean fasterners which hold the body work on dont require threadlock (or mine didnt )

I may see you around on the vast lands of Cambridge :thumb give us a shout if you need a hand.

Looks ok in the pictures :thumb

Change the disks if they are warped plus new pads. Lots of places sell replacent bolts kits - if using stainless in the engine casings then use a bit of copper slip or they will seize.

Would leave rocker cover until a good one comes up on fleabay ;)

Enjoy the bike :beerjug:

Thanks Roger, Jim and Paul. Tax is going to be the awkward bit. It's got an MOT and I will get it insured but I'll have to tax it online if I can as the guy selling it is a small dealer and can't tax it for me.

Cheers, Rob.

New GS

You do NOT need thread lock except where in dictated in THE RIDERS MAUAL which I sugges you READ thoughrouly this is not a bike which vibrates to bits
and things will no fall out. Have a word with neil (steptoe) at the Gss shop and he will put yopu right. Most o0f us have done l;arge milages and never locktighted anything even riding places you dident know existed. My 1150 has 87.00 miles up and the only thing that has fallen off it is me!!.
Pay your £12 quid and join the site.

When changing the discs make sure where the disc meets the wheel you get then cleaned off properly, use a stanley blade to scrape the seating flat and clean, also replace all the washers too,

spike

Nice clean bike by the looks of things
