K & N Air Filter

I've had one fitted now for 4000+ miles with no ill effects.

Stupidly, I fitted it as soon as I got the bike home so I can't really tell of any improvements.

When you compare the OE filter with a K&N one - it's about 3 times the size so the K&N one has gotta set the beast free.

The OE one is like jogging with a gas mask on and the K&N is like jogging with a 2p mouth/nose mask from B&Q. Both filter out the rubbish but one actually lets you breath as well.

Initially I was worried that it might be contributing towards my poor tank range BUT after I did the essential fuel tank mod, I've been getting 200+miles out of a tank without even brimming it.

I fitted a K&N to my 1150 and it made a massive difference. The bike breathed much better and sounded better too!

Unlikely as the K&N is a superior air filter and is made of much better material than the OE one which is just made like a Hoover filter with laods of paper.

At the end of the day - it's easy to fit/remove and wash and it let's your bike breathe more freely.

I have to admit I'm sceptical, because it seems to me that allowing the engine to suck in more air per stroke would require adjusting the fuel injection to compensate. I have no idea if the cunning computer on the bike does this automatically.

But if you fit a K+N or similar it would be worth keeping an eye on the spark plugs to make sure the engine isn't running lean.

Try doing a search on google about K&N filters, if you ride in dusty conditions you might want to rethink this choice. I use to run one in my offroad truck in the Utah desert here in the US until I took it out to clean the filter and once removed had a noticable amount of fine dust that had traveled though the filter. and was built up on the intake. Many of nighmare stories about K & N filters out there, is it really worth the no noticable power increase and saving $20.00 a year? I dont think so....

There no fine dust here only water by the bucket

how is it then that I've read on numerous threads both here and on ADVrider that say fitting a K&N will void your warranty...

something to do with leaning out the already ultra lean 5000rpm range to the point where pistons start melting... er... or something suchlike...

bottom line is:

Have you K&N folks felt any improvement? So far nobody's committed to saying "yes, it makes a positive difference"

if that's the case, then what's the point?
