K & N Air filters, any point?

HiFlo oil filters are good and cheap too.
I'd never reuse an oil filter!

Timolgra refitted his BMW paper filter before his trip to Russia, Mobgolia & the Gobi desert, ditching an oiled foam or K&N
He just took a spare oem filter
He told me it was fine

The reason being, if a paper filter becomes dirty it can be shaken or blown out which I did a few times. I carried a spare only in case a bike drowned which would wreck the paper ones, I'd removed the servo/abs so plenty of room for the spare there.

Grease or spray filter oil in the air box to catch much of the dust then wipe it out if it gets really grungy. :)

I knew you'd have the 'definitive' answer;)

I used to run a K&N, but didn't see any benefits as it's not like a foam filter which you can really clean & squeeze out, before re-oiling

If you're doing road riding, a paper one is more than adequate

I had a K&N fitted to a Honda Transalp I had and did over 100,000 miles with it fitted in 6 years. The main reasons for fitting it were mainly that getting to the filter to change it was a right PITA, and that at just 15% more expensive per filter and knowing I was would be doing high miles it was a real money saver. I cleaned and oiled the K&N once after approx 50,000miles (as per their recommendation) and it hardly really needed that clean. The bike ran fine throughout and the engine was the strongest feature of the bike when I sold it with 115,000 on the clock. Yes, I would fit another if the economics made sense and /or fitting replacements was a PITA. On my 2011 GSA this not is the case so will be staying OEM.

I use a K&N filter, not for any performance gain, but because I can clean it and reuse it for free. It's convenient and cheap in the long run, and as I am keeping my Beemer for the long haul, like Uncle Fester, it works out cheaper than paper filters.

It's not free. The cleaning fluid and oil costs money. And then factor in your time spent cleaning and re-oiling.

I've seen more than a few bikes fitted with K&N filters with crap downstream of the filter.

OK call me 'Anal retentive' but the paper air filters, are of such good quality, that I vacuum all the crap out. Blow through from inside to a outside with an air line.

I then wash them by hand in warm soapy water. Rinse under the tap from inside to outside. Leave to drain then stick it in the airing cupboard. When dry I place in a box as the replacement for next filter change. I run two filters like this, for many years.
