K&N

Apparently, NO.

It WILL make the engine run dangerously lean, so a remap or Powercommander etc will be required afterwards.

Id like to do a Hilltop remap but feck me its hundreds of miles from me ! Might do it in the summer when im on holiday, be a nice little ride down into deepest Englandshire lol

According to various threads I've read the standard paper filter flows way more air than the engine needs and does a good job of filtering (so long as it's clean). If I were you Del and I wanted to make some engine mods I'd spend my money on an accelerator module, has really smoothed out the throttle response on my '10 GSA. The real way forward would me a Hilltop remap but I haven't managed to get there yet either. :):)

Until it needs replacing....... Buy a BMW one or clean and reuse a K and N again, and again, and again and........

K and N has been great coupled with an Akra system and set up power commander for me on my 05 GS1200.

I put a pipercross in mine when I bought it in 2008, as it never needs replacing just a clean I would say it is worth it financially as it has saved me from having the standard filter replaced in the last 6 services,
As for running lean, i'm not so sure, mine has the above filter and decat headers, I also ran a straight through end can for a year with no problems. 37,000 miles later and it still runs fine.

:nenau service interval for air filter is 24k, you would need to do a lot of miles to make it pay for itself.

My concern is that a K & N is considered by many to not filter as effectively as the OE filter, especially if not cleaned & oiled as directed. As I think the OE is perfect for the job, why bother ?

My mate fitte a K&N and YES his bike ran lean and knackered it up. He sold it shortly thereafter - horror story I know!

`sup to you pal but listen to what the lads say and think VERY carfully :bounce1

Paper works better, filters down to smaller particles. probably save more money putting clean air into your engine.

Delboy, I believe I have met you (although you were broke down at the road side at the time) therefore I know the area you live (you told me) and there is a good motorcycle dyno place on your doorstep 1.5hrs max from you. They will fit a power commander and remap your bike for similar money to Hillside or any combination of tuning you want up to a full blown race prepared engine, so why go south?

Factor in the initial higher cost of the K&N, factor in the cost of cleaning liquid, factor in the cost of the filter oil.
Factor in the time spent cleaning and re-oiling the filter and cleaning up yourself.

For well over 100K miles the original works out cheaper, but the main factor is the better filtration offered by the original or aftermarket paper filter..
