Hi all,

My first trip into here so be gentle with me! :D

I recently hired a bike in Malaga for three days....I wanted a Gs really, a 800/1200/GSA ....but all I could get was a K1600GTL!

It wasn't really the bike for the routes I had planned, or for the roads I went on, but I hired it nonetheless.

First impressions were that it was very comfy, very low (compared to my GSA), and packed with gizmos!

Riding it it seemed long, with a sort of tendency to 'tip in' on bends unless you were constantly on the power through the corner. I began on Road mode, and comfort setting, but quickly changed it to normal setting.

I found all the gizmos a bit of a distraction. Using the turn dial on the l/hand bar to was both easy, and ridiculous. It worked well enough for most of the basic function...but to use it to scroll through the artists with the iPod connected meant frantically spinning the dial to go through the alphabet (unless there is an easier way described in the manual? :augie) like you were winding a broken watch!
I never really got the point of the radio/iPod either....you had to drive relatively slow to hear it, or on full blast when on the go..and still it wasn't really clear. I bored with it after a while, and just took my iPod off to stop me from being tempted to fiddle with it!

I also felt with your hand on the l/h bar, fingers covering the clutch lever, it was almost impossible to stretch your thumb around the turn dial to alter/cancel the indicator switch. With your hand just gripping the bar it wasn't a problem though.

The actual motor was a dream...it always seemed to sound like it was racing, but a look to the rev counter saw that it was barely near its 8k redline, and was normally well within 4k and just ticking over.
I did find that the engine would search some times though...like the mapping wasn't set up properly?...but I'm not sure if that's common?

The biggest revelation was when I switched it to Dynamic mode!...what a change!!! The bike was transformed into a stable, nimble, rocket, eager to power into corners, and power out of them too. Everything seemed to improve. So much so that I couldn't ever imagine knocking it out of that mode...apart from in the rain.

So overall I was impressed with the bike...it's a lovely luxury tourer, and if you were travelling two up I can see that it would be hard to beat. But for me it was just too much bike than what you really need. An Rt1200,a Pan European, or a Triumph Trophy would have been just as good, if not a lot better.

I loved....

..the seat, it's amazingly comfortable.
..the brilliant motor
..the general quality of the displays
..the two wind deflectors on the fairing. Although they look a bit flimsy, they work brilliantly.
..the nice touches like the light in the top box, and the central locking.
..the more than ample luggage capacity, that still manages to look fitting to the bike and not overly bulbous.

I didn't like...

..the centre stand. I found it a nightmare to get it on it!
..the screen. I found that if you looked through it there was always a distortion, no matter at what position. And down, the turbulence around your head was quite severe.
..the radio. I just didn't see the point.
..the fact that although my bike had only done 5,000 miles, the iPod function was already malfunctioning, and on several occasions had a life of its own!
..similarly the hazard lights didn't work already either!
..the size of the bike just seemed a bit unnecessary.

Overall I liked the bike, but would never buy one. It's just not my sort of bike. And to be honest I was one of those who drooled over it at shows, and at dealers, when they came out!
It's a lovely luxury tourer, brilliant two up I'd imagine, with a beautiful engine. It's well put together from what I could see, and it did look impressive. It's just not the complete, sorted, ultimate tourer that I imagined it would be. It has faults. It certainly wasn't as daunting on the third day as on the first though, and I can imagine why somebody would grow to love them. :thumb2

That's an honest opinion, and I hope that's not offended too many owners. It's a fine bike, just not for me :thumb2

A bit off topic but did you hire from the guys that list 3 days for £700 on ebay?
If so are they any good?

Having had mine for a few weeks I'm gradually getting used to it - trying to get past the 'what an engine' factor.

I agree with all your likes apart from the luggage - as a two up tourer I'm not sure the capacity is there. Next bank holiday weekend will be the test for this.

On the audio side I find this really works for me. The speakers seem to direct the sound into your helmet. I know, strange, but it does. Using my iPhone you can browse by artist/track/playlist (as well as charging the phone :thumb) but I also ending up listening to the radio (Five Live/TalkSport :augie). It doesn't work at high speed so it will be off on the autobahns.

Centre stand works OK :nenau

My negatives relate to suspension and wind turbulence. On twisty/bumpies you end up with spinal compression. I'm still playing with the ESA to get the best setting. At low speed (50/60) I can ride with the screen down. When it's up things are OK until you get to high speeds when a back draft kicks in pressing you back onto the bars. The pillion reduces this and if it's warm enough the wind deflectors also help.

There's a lot going on in the cockpit - I have promised myself to stop mucking about with all the toys and start riding the thing

As a tourer I honestly can't tell the difference with a pillion on board which was by no means the same on the GSA. Looking forward to a run down to Dorset to do a dry run before Europe :thumby:

Hi edzt,

I rented with bmwmotohire based in teba, Malaga. I got 3 days hire of the bike, and 4 days accommodation in their villa for €800 as a package....that's a very good price, and the villa is gorgeous, and in a great location.

I found them great to deal with. Run by Mark and Lindsay, they are very laid back and friendly.
You can pick the bike up at the airport, or they'll do free transfers from the airport to the villa. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and my time there.

All in all it's a great service. It's the first time I'd done a fly-ride, and it's a brilliant idea! I'll do it again, and I'd definitely go back to bmwmotohire :thumb2

I also dealt with GsHeaven in Malaga...and found them impossible. They never answered my emails, and were so vague when they did (my partner had to ring them to get them to respond!!!). I'd lost confidence in them by the time I got a reply, and I also got some feedback from people that had used them that wasn't good.

I'm surprised you find the luggage insufficient...but maybe that's me being away from tourers for a few years, and not up to speed with what's available. I didn't try to get a helmet in the top box either...so not sure if its possible?

The centre stand?....now not sure if there was an automatic gizmo??? :blast but I found it really hard, and find the GSA much easier to get onto, which I was surprised at.

I know what you mean about the suspension, and the spine compression. I think that is caused by the almost 'armchair' riding position ie so relaxed your body isn't tensed to expect jolts...if that makes sense?

Totally agree about the wind turbulence too. The screen was probably my biggest disappointment.
I rode with the screen mostly fully down. With it in any other position I found looking slightly over it distracting, and through it, there was a distortion looking through the screen at no matter what level it was set at. And set to fully down found the turbulence around my head to be quite severe, and deafening.
Compare that to my old Pan European ST1300, where I would again have it fully down when riding similar types of road, but the airflow was directed towards your chest, which was not only cooling, but meant that there was very little turbulence/wind noise around my head.

I can also imagine that two up it is in it's element, and I can imagine you'd hardly know they were there. You're right about the GSA...a pillion on there is definitely noticeable, as they are much higher, and set further back......it's also a nightmare getting on the pillion seat on a GSA too, I can't imagine that's the same on the K1600?

I read a comment before I left that said a lot of K1600 owners, although they hated to admit it, had to admit that the K1200RT was actually a better tourer....and I can see where that comes from. But I think the K1600 is set just higher than the tourer level, and more a luxury tourer. I'd really like to hire an RT for a few days just to fully compare the two :D

I believe you're thinking of the K1200LT... :hide

Probably.....but if they haven't put the same system on the bigger, more expensive successor to the 1200LT, it's odd

Can't see it listed on the Motorrad website though

Cheap barstewards, BMW :nono

I checked on the BMW spec sheets too...nothing mentioned.

I would have thought they'd have mentioned if it had one when I rented it? :nenau

Glad, hopefully, I wasn't just being a numpty! :augie

The top box fits 2 lids so this will be where most gear will go.

Having exhausts on both sides restricts pannier space :(

I made good use of a tank bag on the GSA - the BM version is excellent. BM don't do one for the GTL as the sweep of the bars could result in the bag hitting the kill switch :eek

Was at my Honda dealer on Sat and a dude was trading in his K GTL for a Wing - spose its a natural progression :nenau

Although he was about 25 stone :D

I had wondered about tank bag options....I was surprised not to see the 'clip on frame' system like on the RT (I'm not sure if that's a good system?).

Maybe I'm more frugal with my packing nowadays, but the luggage seemed more than ample to me......maybe if touring two up, and SWMBO was on the back then maybe I can see the problem :augie....but then sometimes I wonder if the only pannier system that would be big enough would be a Ford Focus! :blast....estate!!! :D

This is where I think the K1600 struggles....

It's not such a perfect 'medium' luxury tourer that it would win over riders who own RT's, Pans, Trophy's etc, maybe like me they'd find it too much bike for what you actually need, and maybe not even as good as what they had.

And for Goldwing owners it's just not big enough, not plush enough, not enough luxury.

My overall memory was that it was a great bike, but not a perfect bike. And in a way I expected it to be a lot closer to perfection than it was.

:thumb2

The panniers are oddly shaped and double-skinned, so you need to be a bit creative with how you pack them and I think using inner bags would be a real waste of space.

Having said that the OH and I manage 2 week tours on my K16GT without any problem, especially as travel wash takes a lot less space than extra clothes!
