The ABS warning light and the Rear Light monitor light are both permanently flashing. Normally the ABS light goes out when the bike moves away and the Rear Light monitor goes off when the brakes are applied.

As this has happened simultaneously I suspect the cause is linked. The Rear Light monitor stays on if a bulb has blown but it hasn't.

Anybody got any clues as to what could be the cause of this? The BMW Riders Handbook doesn't even mention the ABS light and sensor.

PS: It is a 93 model with 64K on the clock.

They do both flash if there's an ABS problem.

Try reseting the abs.

First press the abs button on the pad, this button corrodes badly and if it doesn't work you'll be wasting your time trying to reset it. As lots of people have found out after failing to reset the abs and spending tidy sums of money on parts to fix the abs.
To test it's working, with ignition on press the abs button, and the abs light should stop flashing and stay lit. if it carries on flashing the button is fecked.

if the button is working, with a piece of normal electrical wire stick one end in the diagnostic socket ( a flat three pin plug, usually under the seat cable tied to the frame), and the other end to the battery earth. Turn on ignition, hold the abs reset button down for 20 seconds ( the abs lights should continue flashing, this is good as it means you've earthed it properly) , then turn off the ignition.

It should now be back all to normal. Unless there is a real fault in which case your back to square one.

I agree with Streptoe mine did it when the battery went very flat and the reset with the wire fixed it. Also he is right about the switches but you can take them apart and clean them up if that is the fault

ABS1

ABS1 was only used on K75, K100, and 1993 K1100LT. It's recognizable by the modulator units mounted to the footpeg plates. A fault is indicated by the ABS light and the bulb monitor flashing in unison. The bulb monitor will be on continuously until the system has verified operation of both brake switches and both bulb filaments (taillight and brake light) and then it extinguishes and becomes the second ABS light. The primary ABS light (and the monitor light, once its test is complete) will flash in unison until the bike moves off. If they continue to flash in unison after that, there is a fault. You will probably get a fault #7 upon startup after you have left the battery disconnected for a period of time.

Thanks guys, the ABS switch is working as both lights went solid after I pressed it so I am off to the garage this arvo to do the reset thing:thumb

Before you buy anything for it, I've got a rear servo, sensor and beveldrive, rear wheel, disc, tyre etc available off of my K75RT
NO Driveshaft tho'

Did the reset thing but the lights remain pulsing after I move off so there is a problem elsewhere.

Proff - thanks mate, I'll have that stuff off you, I just need to arrange to collect - unless you plan to be in the Midlands area anytime in the future. :thumb Is that the rear bevel drive that you mentioned before that will improve 1st gear and lowers the revs in top?

Reset now worked

The first attempt failed so I did it again but didn't bother test riding it, I put it back into the garage on the optimate and when I headed off to work this morning the ABS light went off as soon as I pulled away and the Rear Light Monitor light went out the first time I used the front brake.

So thanks guys for the help:thumb

Calling Steptoe, is there a particular sequence in which you push / release the abs button or turn ignition on / off?

Thanks

Barry

Insert a wire in to centre hole on blue diagnostic plug (I can’t remember the colour wire. Put other end of wire to earth, switch on ignition then press and hold down ABS button for 15/20 seconds, keep it held down turn ignition off. That should reset the ignition
But make sure the abs button works, it should stop flashing when pressed down, the wires behind the button can corrode and break off from the soldered attachment

lol snooty was searching the inter web last night and your post came up. Going to try all versions re ignition on push button etc

I went on to do over 130,000 miles on that bike riding it all year round, and the engine was just as strong when I sold it. Absolutely bullet proof, a bike made when BMW was run by engineers not bean counters. Dead easy to service due to the layout of the engine in the frame, if I recall I had to have the rear drive shaft refurbished at about 100,000 miles as the splines had worn out. Sold it to a chap on here who wanted to tow it to France with his motorhome and use it as a runaround.
