i found this, via a link someone here posted in another thread , and now i cant stop thinking about it . this has to be one of the best looking bikes ever made . http://www.bamw.co.uk/index.html]
anyone have an idea of just how much something like this, or a good clean basic would cost ? . and just how practical are they as day to day bikes, with the occasional long trip abroad once or twice a year ? .

The Kalahari seems to make a lot of money in the UK. I went to Germany last year and got one for sensible money (about £3400 I think). BMW made 3000 Basics, the Kalahari version was destined for the South African market and has the 35lt tank. Quite a few RTWers use the Basic as the bike for their trip. I'm hoping to take mine to Morocco in October on a 3000 mile jaunt, here's a link to my bike.

A real beaut, no doubt about it as are all of Gary Burtons. However, you ask about the day to day rideability. There is no doubt that a well sorted airhead will do very well as an everyday bike, but dont expect it to look like the ones above for very long. Most of these bikes have been cleaned extremely well and are low mileage anyway and may never have seen mud. I have two airheads and ride them at weekends whatever the weather and although I would class them as clean, they do not "gleam" like the ones shown. Rough castings and engine fins do not make for shiny bikes. Best way would be for a really nice model for showing and good days and another less perfect one for everyday.. Great bikes, I love mine and enjoy riding them. distance is no problem.

The great travesty of bikes of that quality is they forever are destined for a life of heated garages and polish and never get used except on sunny Sundays, a crying shame for such a capable bike

I'm with you Andy. Much as I'd love a gleaming bike I get far more enjoyment out of my well used Mono than I ever would from a gleaming garaged bike.

isnt this one around £7000-£8000? pretty bike.. but! would you pay that sort of money for one? well if you want a nice one from a UK supplier i think you will have to dig deep. Problem is you can get a R1200GSA for that sort of money. A R1150GSA would cost £2000 less in that condition, would go faster, stop quicker and probably give less trouble. Sod it.. ignore the above...

Having checked the latest prices for Basics in Germany and factoring in Sterlings recent 15% drop in value against the Euro it looks like I will have to stop suggesting that people should source cheap Basics in Germany

That said, Basics seem to be making silly money even for this time of the year (spring time is the worst time to buy any desirable m/c price wise). I think answer is don't be in a hurry, a good bike at sensible money will come along eventually.
