A long way from where I started!
So, there I was in my newly tidied garage thinking, what the hell am I gonna do til the 800 arrives.
I know I said, I'll buy an old knacker and play with it.

So, enter stage left my 1985 GPZ600R.
It runs now, and sounds sweet over 2000 rpm, had it up the road, has plenty ( ish ) of power, but below 2000, or more like 1500 rpm, it rattles so badly it's unbelieveable.
Now as I understand it, if it was rings or mains, the rattle would continue thro the rev range, or even get worse, but it disappears when under load..

Anyone got any ideas? I'm thinking perhaps, cam chain tensioner, or could it be something else??

Long shot I know.

Ta muchly.

probly cam chain tensioner stuck

could also be only firing on 3 as the carbs are out of balance on minimal throttle

or if its been standing around the pilot jets / airways could be gunked up

PS - they are an evil handling bike - very front end twitchy, make sure all suspension is in good condition

fantastic bike when they came out - still very pretty.

rattle is normally out of balance carbs - probably slightly worn as well.

If you get them ok at tickover they may not be so good further up the rev range

Cheers guys, it isn't firing at all well on number three, twos better, but both centre cylinders are less than great. I've swapped the coils and its the same, so I know theyre ok, I guess I need to get a carb balancing kit from somewhere, and a cam chain tensioner. This rattle is more of a knock, and sounds really quite alarming when it's cold and below 1500, could that still be the cam chain tension?

Anyone got any experience with the cheap gunson £20 carb balancing kit? Looks too cheap and nasty to be any good.

Thanks again.

knock?try pullin clutch in,,,,if it goes balance the carbs, if it only gets a bit better its the basket

Trev,

I remember yours and being quite jealous of it.

But to give you a red face in the company of GS'ers I recall you used to Mr Sheen it!

another thought is the primary chain - I had to change one on a 550GPZ once.

(you would probably rather wack it on E bay:augie)

My old one.. (that's not me on it..)

Check the cams there were a couple of recalls and mods on them in the first 2 or 3 years of production.

No Barry don't!!!! :mcgun

Still have a can of Mr.Sheen handy - you never know when you need a spray :o

Pulling in the clutch makes no difference, I did consider the primary, the noise comes from behind the water pump at the bottom of the engine and I think thats where it runs from the crank to the lay shaft?

Don't fancy having to change that I have to say..

will try and get a timing chain tensioner and carb balacing kit, see what that throws up this weekend.
