1980 Z1300 Kawasaki – HCX 648W
This is a relatively rare bike - not many for sale , but this is a good one ! If I was not moving house to one with less motorcycle storage space - this would not be on the market.
I’m in my third year of ownership with it – I bought it as a restored bike , so don’t know or intend to make up what all was done to it – but it’s clearly had a fortune spent on it during it’s 4 years off the road from 2017 to 2021. (I think it’s an original UK bike judging by MOT history and other things)
Probably easier to say what it is not : It’s not all original, some things are obvious like the round instead of rectangular mirrors – some not so obvious like the subtle fork brace and the multitude of stainless steel fittings and fasteners .. and the entire stainless hand made exhaust system (which at a glance looks similar to the original). The bike is not perfect ... but it’s heading that direction.
When I got it - it looked lovely , but was totally unrideable. I spent a lot of time going through it – and ended up re-rebuilding carbs, this time with correct o rings and settings ! , a new coil (1 of three) correct grade of plugs etc etc. Also did the easy stuff like oil and filter changes – new cables all round and so forth. It now rides lovely and the brakes are “acceptable” (crap by modern standards) and it’s returning mid 40’s mpg on a run.
Pricing : This is a difficult one – it’s the old story , worth what someone is prepared to pay. There are several for sale on Mainland Europe now - asking 16K to 18.5K Euros. They can be bought for £5 to £7K all day long in England .... but , you’ll pay someone £15 to 20 K to get it in the condition of this one. (I have no idea where you could get an exhaust system like this one has ?)
Photos tell it all hopefully – viewing and questions welcome . Free Tax , no MOT and in my case £95 per year insurance makes it cheap motoring . The engine noise and torque are very addictive – BUT , it’s a heavy brute. If anyone on mainland wants it , I can help with delivery / airport collection etc etc – just ask !
