I'm planning a trip through Morocco and south on my xCo and wonder about increasing the cooling to avoid the engine overheating. I don't want to go as far as an enlarged radiator but am considering a Scheffelmeier oil cooler

http://www.bashplates.de/BMW-G-650-Xchallenge-Xcountry/Oil-cooler-for-BMW-G650-single::83.html.

Has anyone experience of using this cooler, particularly in south Morocco conditions and how effective it is?

I realise I also need to consider the effect of high temperatures on the regulator but not sure what I can do to improve things there, and I expect the regulator to recover once it's cooled.

I took my X challenge to Morocco earlier this year, temperatures were high 30's creeping into the low 40's, I had no problems with the regulator/rectifier but my rad continually lost fluid, and temp light was on a lot. For some reason the fan wasn't cutting in so fitted a switch to allow fan to be kept on, it did help but bike still suffered overheating.
I am now looking into the PACE radiator option, not looked into the oil cooler so cannot comment.

Is your rad, filled with mud?

JB there was a little bit of mud in the fins but I washed that out whilst at a nice hotel in the Sahara, didn't really help, just going through it now, replacing the thermostat and rad cap, renew all coolant and see what happens, if still no good will have to bite the bullet and go down the PACE route.

Just wondered, my XCo rad is clean as a whistle with the low mudguard

I used the scheff oil cooler in siberia last year with a low fender. Fan still comes on 1st/2nd gear trails at 30c plus but the bike never overheated. oil cooler has the advantage of adding a touch more oil into the engine which is no bad thing. I can´t comment as to exactly how effective it is as the other XC with me had one too.

Just read that old thread Mike, my memory has faded a bit. Looks like i,ll have to think up another solution ......

Thanks for the comments guys and it was interesting reading the other thread. I also sent an email to Pace and had no reply. I'm leaning towards the oil cooler and like the thought that with the cooler there is more oil in circulation.

Of course as happens with these proposed trips, the Africa venture seems less likley this evening, but I'm sure I'll take the xcountry down to Morocco before long.

Cheers Mick

I find it easier to go round, rather than through gloop

Comes from a Trials riding background

but doesn't riding on the tarmac kinda defeat the idea of going for a trail ride? :D

Anyhow, Xco should be fine, IIRC it doesn't have those silly vents cut into the back of the front fender...

Keeping cool

Just to get back to my topic, I got a reply to my email to Pace offering a radiator for an xCountrry for £450. I don't now intend to take them up on this but the info may be useful for others. Regards
