I have just bought a new LC and it came with keyless, I have to say I did not particularly want it but the bike was in the showroom and came with it.

First ride from York to Cardiff I am a surveyor and had a survey down there so though have a run through Wales use all the twisties to run it in happy days and all worked perfectly.

Yesterday went to start it from the hotel and the keyless just made a clicking noise like it does when you set the steering lock. 10 or more attempts later and finally it came to life. Stopped for petrol half way back and it did the same but this time refused to come to life. I tried the little plastic key against the transponder under the wheel arch no joy.

After half an hour trying called BMW and they called back to say recovery was being dispatched whilst on the phone to them I pressed the button and it came to life.
I had enough petrol to get home and so rode home.

Once home tried to start it and this time absolutely refused to come to life so I had it recovered to my dealer.

My question is , anyone else had this issue ? I go abroad a lot on the bike and really don't want to be stranded if this is an known issue, I will ask the dealer to remove it and fit a normal key.

By the way great forum, I have just sent my subscription.

Hi Woody, I have keyless on a 2016 LC. Never had a problem, however you have raised a concern. I don't normally carry the small plastic key, perhaps I should.

Nice to hear you have not had any issues.

This was my first ride on the new bike so it will be interesting to see what the issue is. Cannot be the battery as I rode 350 miles the day before probably stopped 3/4 times with no probelms.

I had an ongoing issue with one bike that the dealer never managed to resolve and finally rejected the bike after 12 months - with help from BMW Customer Service.

Pleased to say that I've not had any issues since - tempting fate now!

Wouldn't be too quick to say it can't be tr battery ..

I got one key with a fob and one plastic emergency key. Have to say the plastic one is not very robust wouldn't like to try unlocking the panniers if the locks are cacked in muck.

When I first got mine I found the whole keyless thing a total pita, and I looked into having it removed and replaced with an ordinary key. The eventual answer from BMW was that it just wasn't sensibly doable - it would have been cheaper to just immediately chop the bike in for a new one which was non-keyless.

Sorry to hear about your issues. I have not had any at all and I have keyless on my Triple Black and K16. I always carry the plastic emergency key though, just in case - it's flat enough to fit in to a wallet.

It would be interesting to know what excuse - errm sorry - solution they come up with for you.....

The plastic one I had on my car was copied at a cobblers for less than £10 ( no transponder), vacuum sealed in a bag and hidden on the car. I think they stopped issues them as the plastic ages, gets brittle and snaps off in the lock.

Thanks JTB looks like I am stuck with keyless, I hope it gets sorted and no more issues.

What were your problems with it

I will post what BMW do to resolve this. It went in late yesterday afternoon so probably wont know anything until next week.

I also didn't think I'd trust the plastic key- I just had a quote from a dealer for a duplicate fob with flip out key- £175!!!
Might try to key the plastic one duplicated at a key cutter. :)

I got my local key shop to cut me a metal key just to use on the panniers/seat/Sat nav lock(s) if I'm away on a big trip and loose the fob.
Otherwise its just the key fob for the keyless on a lanyard round my neck. I don't bother with the plastic spare unless again on a long trip. Even with a flat fob battery you can still use the key fob to start the bike.
Having said that I also have spare fob battery taped under the seat.

Sorry, that was reading really well until we got to what should have read "taped".

I think I will have a spare cut so I don't have to rely on the plastic one.

DesertYellow good to hear you have not had any issues I would like to be confident with the technology.

Just a shame my first outing on the new bike has left me a bit disappointed.

i didnt want keyless or spoked wheels on my gs,so i bought a bike without them:D,why did you buy something you didnt want just because it was in the showroom?

I did a good deal because it was sat in the showroom. Keyless didn't put me off just would not have specified it if I was ordering from scratch.
