We suffered a house break in last week. It's a long story which included both cars been taken, but the bike wasn't touched (both cars have since been recovered).

They took various keys including one of the bike keys. What's the solution to change the bike keys? Presumably this involves the immobaliser. Anybody any advice before I contact the dealer?

Sorry to hear about the break in I hope they got the thieving scumbags.

Sorry dont know about the key situation.

I believe your dealer can 'disable' the affected key by reading the chip in the remaining key and comparing it with whatever BMW keep on their database.

That'll stop the bike being started/alarm disabled but won't stop them getting past the steering lock (not that it is much of a deterrent anyway).

I think they can also provide a new key.

Basically speak to your dealer ASAP.

Cooperman, sorry to hear about your burglary, both my son and myself purchased GSAs although I got 2 keys with alarm fobs my son only got the one plus a "Wallet" key a flat black plastic thing that works at a pinch. We were told that BMW make 10 (I think) keys for each bike and will only issue them one at a time. So I think your best bet would be to check with the dealer, you don't want someone coming back for the bike even if you do get another key. :blagblah

Sounds like something to explore with your insurance company, as a legitimate claim and preventative measure.

I suspect replacing the keys will be an expensive business, with the transponder and barrel swap etc, and you may have a better chance pitching the cost of that to your bike insurer rather than household contents insurer, as its they who stand most to lose if the keys/barrel/transponder codes aren't changed.

Interesting question though, and I have a nasty feeling that you may have an uphill struggle trying to get it sorted, even though it's a common sense thing for them to pay out for.

Good luck :thumb2

If it's anything like Honda's HISS system it's gonna be expensive. If you loose your keys with HISS it's new ECU time.

But as Pukmeister says, it's dealer time - good luck!

Well worth trying this route as it partly worked for me a while ago. We had a break in and they took the spare keys to my car and tried to steal it, and failed, but took the keys with them. I contacted my insurance company and the covered a large portion of the costs reprogramming the ECU and changing locks.

And chain the bike up 'til you get it sorted! I recall reading reports of an increase in house break ins around London, where little more than keys were sstolen. Then used to drive off the victim's car. People were having issues with their insurance companies because the key was being used to perform the theft. There is a thread on here from someone in a similar position; IIRC also in the 1200GS section.

Just get a new key from the dealer its about £55 and take your other keys with you. They will program your new key and ban your lost one. You don't need an new ECU and BMW doesn't have a huge warehouse full of cut keys ready to hand out to anyone who losses theirs. They are cut at the time like any other key and the transponder chip is coded into your ECU.

This will be covered by your house insurance. Just add it to the claim. They will change all locks for which keys have been stolen.

That's clever. One up for modern technology!

Yes but don't incur any expenses without written approval from your insurer. Otherwise you may not get re-imbursed !

Kinda but they could have implemented it better. Most modern cars you have a master key you put that in turn on and off then put your new key in turn on and off and its programmed. Course none if this stops the old key from actually working the locks so the steering lock and such can still be undone. One last note, don't forget to take your log book with you, no log book no new key.

Thanks Marki

Put a call into the dealership today and they were going to call me back but I had to go out and, as I currently do not have a mobile (another thing that got nicked), I haven't yet got a response. Sounds reassuring though. I'll confirm what they say tomorrow.

As Marki says. It even says the same in the manual....
