Last year I only got as far as Cochem, Germany where I hung about with a group of dodgy characters (you know who you are)!
This year I'm off to Misano, Italy for Ducati's 100th anniversary party.
I'm leaving home on the 25th or 26th June (subject to weather) and heading to stay the night with my daughter near Edinburgh then down to Ashford for the next night in preparation for an early Chunnel train the next day.
Long ride down through France after that to, maybe, Albertville area for an overnight and then down the RDGA again (although my 1260S Multistrada has never been there yet and she wants her photo taken just like my twin cam GSA had on a few occasions.)
Turn east into Italy and stop somewhere then on to Scarperia (I love it there!) near to the Mugello circuit for a night and then drop down to Misano for the party.
(No Scotland No Party!!!!)

Of course, this could all change subject to weather and me deciding to ride a different route than, roughly, planned.

Daily miles Running total

Day 1 Thursday 25th June

Home to Haddington 188 188 (Daily miles Running total)

Overnight stop at my daughter’s place to break up the long haul to the Chunnel.

Day 2 Friday 26th June

Haddington to Ashford, Kent. 424 632

Stayed at the Conningbrook Hotel where I’ve stayed a few times in the past. Unfortunately, they are now owned by some large conglomerate and the quality has gone downhill. I usually have steak and ale pie but they had none. Alright, I’ll have fish and chips instead then I said. Sorry, we’ve no fish came the reply. How can you run out of fish! Fine, I’ll take the duck – we’ve no duck either came the response. What, on your menu, do you have I ask. We have sea bream. I’ll have that then. My dinner arrives and half the plate is rocket salad and the other half is a ratatouille type mix with a minute piece of sea bream the size of a fork handle in the middle. I got the manager over and had a discussion with her. They also now have a compulsory 10% service charge – I didn’t like that either. I left the dinner and paid nothing but I won’t be back – service was appalling!

Day 3 Saturday 27th June

Ashford to Bourg en Bresse, France 467 1099

As usual I was aiming for Albertville so I could ride some of the RdGA the next day but, at 38C, it was too hot for me to continue any further as I was cooked! At the last services I stopped at I looked at a map and for the nearest place with a hotel and that’s where I stayed at a local Ibis. I found the restaurants and bars and had an acceptable evening to myself.

Day 4 Sunday 28th June

Bourg en Bresse to Guillestre 307 1406

I continued on to Albertville, Cormet de Roseland, Col d’Isere, Col d’Galibier and Col d’Guillestre. What I didn’t know was that the Galibier and Guillestre cols were closed to all northbound (and probably southbound) traffic for a cycle race! I met no traffic heading north and only a few bikes in front of me heading south but I had to overtake thousands of cyclists that wanted to use the whole road! I must remember not to do that again on a Sunday.

I stayed the night in Guillestre at a nice hotel I just happened to come across up a hill.20260628_113026.jpg20260628_160325.jpg20260628_160329.jpg20260628_160625.jpg

Day 5 Monday 29th June

Guillestre to Viareggio, Italy. 255 1661

I was, originally, going to stop west of Genova but carried on to Viareggio. It’s a long beach type place and not my cup-of-tea but I found a hotel (hotel London) on the main drag and could park my bike outside the front door – a result. It is a yachting place so I had a look at some and found a couple for my wife and me. Being a busy tourist place there was no shortage of bars and restaurants.
