Day 6 Tuesday 30th June
Viareggio to Misano 197 1858
I went via the Ducati dealer in Firenze, because I could, then east of Bologna and down to Misano for a wee early peak at what was going to be happening later in the week. The hub (of the fanzone-type event) is the Doce Vita and the owner recognised me from two years ago (I don’t know how) so my first beer was on the house – a great start!

Day 7 Wednesday 1st July
Misano to Scarperia 110 1968
I always try to get into a local hotel for the Mugello MotoGP but never do so I thought if I stay there a night I might have a little bit of leverage. Sadly that didn’t work as the receptionist informed that the racing teams always stay there so there’s never any available rooms for fans! There’s not a lot of accommodation in Scarperia. Fine, I’ll just walk up to the local bar I always frequent when I’m there. Unfortunately, it’s Wednesday and it’s closed as is the local trattoria I frequent! Luckily I know another couple of bars and I ate swarmas at a new Syrian restaurant.

Day 8 Thursday 2nd July
Scarperia to Misano 110 2078
I left early morning and headed for Forli which took me over Passo del Muraglione. Going up was very misty and as I started to come down it started to rain so I sheltered under some trees, once I found them, and got my waterproofs on. It was a bit late by then as I was already soaked! Onwards to Misano to my pre-booked hotel which is the same one I stayed in on Tuesday so at least I knew where it was. Sunny and 38C – I’m still cooked!
Time to drink beer and have fun!

Day 12 Monday 6th July
Misano to Livigno 350 2428
I followed my Nav V which took me via Switzerland and not by way of Bergamo as I expected it to. This meant I approached Livigno from the north-east and ended up at a one-way tunnel (been here before) which led on to a dam wall with a Swiss toll at the far end before continuing on to Livigno. I booked into a hotel I’d stayed at a few times before and then headed out to find the local microbrewery for a beer, or two.

Day 13 Tuesday 7th July
Livigno to St. Quentin, France 556 2984
I was now in a hurry so a couple of high mileage days were required. I’ve stayed here before so I knew where the main eating square was so I headed to that area and found an Ibis round the corner from it with private parking so I stayed there. Time for a brief walk and then some beer and dinner before retiring as I’d been on the road for 12.5 hours and was now tired!

Day 14 Wednesday 8th July
St. Quentin to Begelly, South Wales 423 3407
110 miles in France then onto the Chunnel to England. Once there I head west and get to the M25 south heading for the M3 (according to my Nav V). Unfortunately, I got in 10 miles of start / stop traffic, on the M25, with no hard shoulder available and I was really cooking in 34C heat. Once I cleared the traffic jam the signs said the M23 was closed! F***!!!! I don’t know this area at all so Reigate, Ruislip and Redding all meant nothing to me. I went local to a petrol station and filled up and asked 4 people for directions but none of them knew the area either! The sat nav took round some weird local narrow roads (nothing new here) and my sat nav seemed to update and I found myself on the M25 again heading for Basingstoke which took me to the M4 and West. At last I was on the right route. I got to my destination early afternoon (only 10.5 hours on the road today) and managed to see my terminally ill sister-in-law that afternoon. Sadly, she died the next day but I made it in time to see her and her see me.
Day 17 Saturday 11th July
Begelly to Moffat 353 3760
Stayed at the Annandale Arms hotel which has private parking at the back next to a nice sitting area outside. My room was right there too but had definitely seen better days. Dinner in the Star hotel was very good.

Moffat to home 224 3984
