Hi all,
I am new to the GS12 and love the bike so far, but have started to get some lower back pain. I guess its due to the upright riding position, which I am not used too. Just wondered if anyone could recommend a decent kidney belt with some proper support rather than just a piece of elastic round your waste.I await the genuine replies & the pisstakers (as always). Thanks.

Before strapping yourself up, try adjusting the bars.......sort your ergonomics out, or all you're doing is disguising a problem

Bar raisers can work forwards OR backwards (depending on type of course) so you may well be able to find a better position.

I'm no medic, but it seems common sense to solve the root cause rather than hiding the symptoms :nenau

I agree with this totally, you could make a slight problem worse if you are on a long journey.
the GS is one of the most comfortable bikes I have riden in terms of posture, coming from sports bikes that is and KTM's.

good luck

After years of having no pains with riding sports bikes, I got lower back pain when I started commuting on sit up and beg types. The reason was, when sitting at a steady speed on the motorway my shoulders would come forward and back would bend as I slouched into a bad posture. I purchased the below velcro weight lifting belt and it solved it completely. It's exactly the same as a kidney belt but wider and cheaper. I do 30k miles a year on just commuting and won't ride without it.

If nothing else, it's a cheap try before you start messing about with your bike.

BMW dose this brilliant back protector with kidney belt , http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139154 , I have on and is absolutely fantastic ! But how the othe guys was saying try to adjust your bars , that will help a lot after all BMW bikes are very comfortable and you hardly here complaints about riding discomfort :)

Reading through your previous posts you ought to be paid a fee by BMW, or at least given a job working for them :augie

if you're outside the general average size, weight, height, length arms/legs etc....then not all bikes are comfortable.

Lose some weight , take off your high hills , do some exersice then you will see some improvement :D:blagblah

I am a great supporter off BMW but also a great admire off you , you are a top man also BMW :) I don't know abou job with BMW , it will probably be a boring job for me :blagblah , I am very busy as I speak :beerjug:

Another approach to this is to improve your physical conditioning. Whatever bike you ride, it shouldn't be hurting your back! There's an under lying issue.

:P

Look underneath your seat and you have two adjustable height bars.

The seat seems to naturally sit slightly low at the front which would tilt your hips forward and stress your lower back. Many folk have the front of the seat set high and the back set low to level it out.

Try that first ... :thumb2

As above. The seat was uncomfortable for me in it's original position. Changed the front bar to high position and problem sorted. The handle bars doesn't need adjusting for me when riding on the road but for any off road antics I'll have to raise the handle bars. Saves you buying all sorts of expensive bits that don't work. We'll have it off you in the for sale section :D.

Thanks Simon H. Yeah, you are spot on. I do tend to slouch into a bad posture after a while. I have the low seat option aswell and it is `scooped` out, if you know what I mean.I will try one of the suggestions of raising the front bar too and will definately order the belt you have sent me the link to. Thanks mate. Will let you know how I get on :thumb2

Go see a physiotherapist, could be the best £35 youve ever spent.

Forgive me if I'm stating something you already know, but a kidney belt isn't actually just a piece of elastic around your waste .... it's there to keep your kidneys warm! Nothing to do with support. I've used one since the early '80s, bought for me by a German pal who was astounded that bikers over here didn't really use them - seen as not very trendy back then! Simple piece of kit that performs a basic but very important job - and a chill to the lower back is more likely on a bike where you're in a sit-up position.
