Just watching the news:

Bloke says down to -12C tonight on Scots forecast.

30 seconds later on main weather report, a different weather operative said it could go to -15C in the Far North.

That's a tad chilly, what?
What's the lowest temperature anyone has personally experienced in Scotland?

and the same on 30th december 1995 at Altnaharra (highland)

those are the lowest ever in scotland just 1.1c Colder than the English record set at Newport (shropshire) also on 10th january 1982 -26.1°C

so stop yer blathering.. -15c is positively balmy!!

I've seen it down at minus 8 at home (Banchory) but known it colder further up the river at Ballater and Braemer.

Coldest I've been was -30 odd in Roros Norway and in Finse (also Norway where they filmed one of the Star Wars filnms) where it was minus 26 and we had an outside loo, I kid you not.

May I suggest a jumper and a hat

Altnaharra must have it's own weather system. It always comes up with really low temps in the Winter, yet in the Summer the temperature is usually higher that anywhere else around it.

As for blathering...ahm oot in just me shreddies for a ride tomorrow.
So that's me and HRH...anyone else gonna brave it?

Be '96 I think. Two year old diesel Espace had been completely reliable, (I know, that's a miracle) but wouldn't start on the day we were to come home after Christmas in a cottage near Kingussie.

To first neighbour, "Do you have any jump leads? By the way, do you know what the temperature is?" "No jump leads" says he "and our thermometer is off the bottom of the scale at -15C. Try Billy along the road"

Hello Billy, "Do you have any jump leads? By the way, do you know what the temperature is?" "Yes I've got jump leads, I'll bring them along in a few minutes with a car" says he "and our thermometer is off the bottom of the scale of -25C."

Espace started immediately with an extra battery and was fine the rest of the day but every time I was outside I could feel the hairs in my nose feezing and then cracking as I breathed. Weird feeling that I'd never felt even when ski-ing.

The winter of '82 was pretty cold, even here on the Forth Estuary. It was down to -15 deg C at times. I remember trying to open the rear door of a fairly new, rented, Ford Escort - the door was frozen to the rubber and the handle broke off in my hand. Next one was the winter of '92 (I think) when the lowest I remember seeing here was -17 deg C.

Dunno about Newport, I've not heard that before, but Shawbury (3 miles from my house) often crops up as one of the coldest places in England. I thought Shawbury held the British record of something like -28 in 1981 but having done a bit of googling it seems like there's some variation in the figures and it's between Braemar, Altnaharra and Shawbury at something like -27.2 in 1981, with 1995 being another cold one. I'm sure further research which I'm not arsed to do would yield the correct answer.
I only know it was fecking bitter out this morning.

Cold Night shifts

In 1982 I was night shift when those temperatures were reached. I was foot patrol in Edinburgh and the night temp got down between -15 and -18 that week. We had metal boxes to hide in which were equiped with 1 bar electric fires, fitted near the roof.

Mind you, all of us were well aware of the local bakeries, hospitals and other places of refuge.

Spent most of the next week dealign with flooding calls.

I was in a transit campervan that I had bypassed the heater matrix because it was leaking thus no heater. Scrapping ice of the inside of the windscreen.
-24 at Glencoe I had all my bike gear on inc crash helmet and a quilt wrapped round me glad it was dark an no knut could see me
First time I saw the need for snowpoles

It's Flip-Flop weather here too, I pulled mine out to put on just a few minutes ago but unfortunately the soles are completely worn through.

Does anyone out there know where I could have them re-soled? Don't want to pay a fortune but a fair price.....Well fine.
