I can't imagine the circumstances where checking my own passport might be necessary. I suppose I could use a mirror to check that the picture looks like me. 
Even on those rare occasions when there are long queues at the UK control, using staff passes or anything like that is a huge no-no when travelling on private business. It would probably annoy the public if I was seen to be getting preferment when I was on my way home from a holiday, although queueing up just means a slightly longer queue. Still, makes sense, I suppose.
The shaky image is because flash photography can set off the fire detection system in the tunnel. I'm not aware that this has ever happened, but as it might kick off the inert gas flooding system, I wouldn't want to take a chance.
