Klim Gear

Have just had a look at this stuff and like the look of it although not too sure on how much protection it will give in the event of a fall off.
Love the blue trousers just a shame cant seem to find the matching jacket but my kinda prices :thumb
Have just emailed them re ladies sizing and if they do them :nenau

I think the kit is designed to be worn with seperate body armour. Not sure what the levels of protection are like for abrasion :nenau

Can you share any experience regarding how the jackets stand up to abuse? I've always thought that the reason most bike jackets have gore-tex as the liner is that it's not really up to the abuse. And, if you do tear the outer, the liner will still keep you dry. To be honest, I have not managed to tear my jacket yet so maybe this isn't really a problem. However, what is a problem is how much water the outer soaks up (and therefore weighs a ton and keeps you cold through windchill) and how long the outer takes to dry (overnight is rarely enough).

Thanks for your help :thumb2

Hi Mav,
There are a few brands of motorcycling gear that use the waterproof membrane as the outer 'shell', Aerostich and Rukka being the two that are best known (Rukka also make items with zip out liners). The membrane is usually laminated with an outer fabric (cordura nylon/ballistic nylon) which gives it more strength and abrasion resistance.
I absolutely agree with you about the problems associated with 'liners' rather than shells. I really hate being weighed down with a jacket full of icy cold water, that although not touching my skin, is still chilling me to the bone.
I think the main reason more brands dont make 'shell' garments is simply that they are more technically difficult and far more expensive to produce. All the seams must be taped and any stitching must be sealed(or taped), plus additional reinforcement must be added to make them durable enough to withstand the rigours of motorcycling. All pricey and at the end of the day that cost is seen in the much higher asking price for these types of garments. BUT, they are better for the intended purpose of keeping you dry and warm in wet and cold conditions...
Essentially this is how the 'outdoor' world do it, just their products dont have to be quite as tough.

The Valdez jacket/Dakar pant combo have been used for the last couple of seasons by Jonah Street and Casey McCoy in the Dakar and Australian rallys, proving plenty tough enough for these events.
The gear is very popular with the American adventure riding community and i havnt read ANY bad reports regarding failures.
Only a handful of people in the UK have these garments at the moment. Steve Ireland from WOR events has been riding in one for the whole winter(Valdez Parka). Steves out riding pretty much every weekend in hard (welsh!) off-road conditions and thinks its the bollocks (his words). I think its become his day to day life coat as well as his riding one.

Little Beemer, i'll post up some more information on the site regarding leg lengths and waist sizes in the next few days. They dont make any specific womens sizes, but i'll try to do some research regarding their previous female customers.
None of the gear features built in body armour, it was designed to fit over knee braces and armoured shirts etc. as it is primarily off-road/dualsport gear. (If you do ride off-road a lot though this type of gear really makes a big difference to your range of movement and comfort).
Haven't skidded down the road in this stuff yet so i cant make an accurate comment on abrasion resistance, but with my track record should only be a matter of time! Its tough kit though, im confident!!!
Hope this helps.

Just re-read some of those questions about kit saturating with water and thought in keeping with my new, 'blunt and honest', title I'd point out a few things.

If you do have a jacket that works on a waterproof lining system (like the Hein Gericke stuff) the outer saturation problems can be pretty annoying. Before I got my hands on my Klim gear I rode many thousands of miles in kit that had an external non-waterproof shell and found problems of outer saturation to be a real hassle. I got around them mostly by washing my jacket outer in pure soap flakes and then washing in a DWR (durable water repellant) coating by someone like Nikwax. No matter how good your waterproof membrane layer is, it will never work if saturated by water externally....Thats why even with goretex kit we recommend the system mentioned above to the keep the outer laminated layer clean and water shedding. Goretex is NOT a fit and forget option. Like all good things a regular maintenance program will provide many years of great service (even BMW's need servicing!!!). Conversely a lack of maintenance will substantially reduce the working life of your kit!

Have a great New Year everyone, and ride safe!!!

Just thought I'd give an update now that I've used them over the winter.

Fit and confort has been excellent, they fit over my Tech8's without snagging and are baggy enough not to get caught up in my knee/shin pads. Likewise no probs with my 'Force' padded pants.

I've been using my Twat suit trouser Gortex liners in them on really wet days, otherwise they aren't too bad at shrugging off the wet and dry out quickly. They also wash well, coming up like new so far.

Nothing has failed, torn or scuffed yet despite numerous (and I mean numerous) off road 'offs'. There is one small hole burnt on the inside right lower leg from a hot exhaust/trapped under the bike moment :o

Can't say I've been cold in them over the winter (I use them on the road occasionaly as well) so have only to see how effective the venting is now summer is almost with us. The leg zips are huge though and certainly let a lot of air through so I'm hoping that they should be good.

So, overall, I'm dead chuffed with them - they work, they look good IMHO and they are a good price. So far, if I had to replace them I'd get the same again, unless something better came along.

does anyone know where it would be possable to see this kit in the flesh intead of just looking at pictures on a computer!

See them in the flesh........

Hi,
We are going to be out and about with all of our kit this summer, including the whole range of Klim gear. We've just got the new 'Chinook' in the boot enduro pants in, plus the two styles of shirts and matching gloves.
We will definately be at the UK Horizons Unlimited meeting from the 3rd to 6th July with further dates yet to be confirmed. We've been very busy developing and manufacturing a complete range of bashplates for all KTM, Honda and Husqvarna enduro and MX bikes(plus the BMW F800GS). They are now all complete so we're planning a summer of events
If anyone has knows of any good adventure biking events that would be good to attend please let us know and we'll endeavour to be there.
