Hi chaps,

Apart from my ADV, I've got an XR 650 that I ride in the Desert. I was thinking of getting a pair of knee braces as extra protection, but I've heard conflicting advice as to their effectiveness.

I'd appreciate your thoughts please.

Kind regards

Try contacting Chris (That Fat Twat), I think he told me they were mandatory, and expensive, for competing in the Dakar.

good skiing shops do knee bracesm ranging from a basic wrap-around neoprene thing, to a neoprene one with more straps, steel spring reinforcement that runs down the side of the knee anda patella guard thing......that's what I use for skiing, but as the position for riding is a bit different it's too uncomfortable.

The top of the range knee braces are hi tech carbon fibre things, all custom fitted and nmade, and can be used for all sorts of sports, as the 'at rest' position can be changed so that the brace helps return to that, rather than the straighter position my neoprene one does.

These hi-tech ones go from a couple of hundred pounds right up to about 500

Snow and Rock do several types, from the neoprene ones upwards.

This is what I use;

Speaking as a vendor of such equipment I can do you a pair for as little as £5 BUT ask yourself if you really need them. If your knees are too weak to deal with the punishment you need to do exercises to build up the muscle. By supporting them where no underlying injury prevents other natrula support you will cause muscle wastage as they do not need to do the work required of them.

My advice, get leg wieght from JB sports and do leg raises, and do some other equally silly exercises to build the muscle. This will help your back, knees and mind.

Rmember also that pain is natures way of telling you it hurts!

Knee braces have nothing to do with leg strength. They are used to help prevent joint damage and the tendons holding it together (ACL, ICL etc) from being torn or even detached from the bone.

This occurs when the lower leg is twisted or forced into a position beyond its normal range of movement. A common injury in skiing or motocross.

If you are thinking about buying them for supporting the normal action of the knee, they are worthless.

Thanks for the answers chaps and sorry for my late reply, but I have been away flying.

Food for thought too regarding any real need for them. I do have strong legs and am not experiencing problems, but although the advice is conflicting, I really want to prevent damage in the future. I've rerad of guys swearing that they've prevented injuries, but this is truly subjecxtive.

What to do.........?

Merry Xmas

They are useful for kneeling down whn you a trying to pick up the loose change youve dropped.

The ones that professionals wear (and therefore I imagine actually work) are very very different to the ones shown here and cost a lot more.

knee braces

I would approach them with caution as if a force is applied that would twist your knee and the brace prevents that force acting on the knee then that force will be transferred up the leg to the hip!

well thats my twopenneth worth :D

On a serious note, that wouldn't be any bloody good at all....consider the ways your legs need to move on a pogo stick....that thing would ..
