Knobblies on tarmac

Erm.......if it happened this way, then there was something else wrong.....bikes traveling in a straight line don't just start wobbling for no reason, even if they are on knobblies :nenau

I've just got back from Wales, two up (heavy too) , plus all the camping kit and on some very wet roads through the centre of Wales (we wanted to come back te scenic route) and we had no problems....you just take corners a bit slower and in particular watch out for metalwork (grills, gratings etc) and white lines /banding.

TKC's are OK in the wet...don't let people put you off.
the only explaination I can come up with , is there is some tar banding on the road so where I hit that which caused I`ve no idea :nenau

Anakees

So are Anakees IMHO.

Of course they are ok in the wet:blast Any tyre is ok anywhere as long as you allow for it. The rain is never a problem with TKC's or the far superior Heidenaus (which wear better). Road tyres like 020's are fine if you only ride on the road (which a real GSER only does part of the time. The Anakee and Tourance are naff on even the smoothest fire road while TKC's perform well on the road in all conditions and are vastly superior for even moderate off roading.:rob
:topic However heidenau tyres beat all of em.............................. and certainly work as well as Anakees or Tourances even in the wet.:beerjug: :thumb2 Around £140 for two rears and front:eek: (check the bargain section) usually get around 4k miles from rear against 2.6k for TKC.:clap :clap :clap Front normally does about 8k.:thumb

Hi all, Have had my gsa a few months with tourance tyres on and am thinking of changing to off road tyres which I have a set of. My question is what are off road tyres like on long road journeys and during wet weather on tarmac too.

Why do you want to fit TKCs, other than because you have some? Are you planning on doing some serious off-roading? If not, Tourances will last 2-3 times longer, be quieter on the roads, be more secure on wet tarmac and are fine for a bit of off-roading in the dry (I find them a bit slippy in the wet on mud though, don't I Fanum ;) )

Exactley that, I do have some which were supplied with the bike new, also want to do a lot more off road and with the small off road I have done so far the front is everywhere especially in gravel, Admit used to ride motox bikes which are a bit lighter (about 200kg he he) so just want to see how I fair on the gsa with knobbles on. Thanks everyone again and will definatley go on the next trip to put faces to names..

I've used Anakee's, all be it on previous Tigers, along with Tourance and Pirelli's, and don't recall a problem in the wet. I'd be hard pushed to mark any differences in performance between any of 'em.
I managed to scrape the hero blobs whatever tyre I was on (though not in the wet I hasten to add).

Phil

I couldn't agree more. I've done 30,000 miles on Anakees and they are excellent tyres. The TKCs are very good too, but they don't 'arf vibe at speed....

I would say that there is very little difference between a Tourance and an Anakee, they are both exceptional tyres and last 10-12k miles. Don't be put off by horror stories, one fall(er) doesn't make a bad tyre.

Paul.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune................ However, my experience and plenty of other GSER's is that TKC's work well in the wet:eek: and extremely well in the dry

Snowing then was it on friday :augie :D

Sorry Fred but I just stumbled across this thread and couldn't resist. Get well soon

I would nt touch them they are shit on wet greasy roads talking from experience after suffered broken ribs and punctured lung when my GS went down on a straigh wet road doing 40mph

I would agree with your comment about them in the wet:eek: ,but if you ride off road there is nothing to touch them.:thumb2 I have had two sets on,but as i now only ride on road (1200 gsa) i use conti road attack.

Sorry Paul, but IMHO you could not get any further from the truth if you tried.

The only thing that Tourances and Anakees have in common is that they are both round and made of rubber.

In terms of performance there is a huge amount of differance, all in favour of the Tourance, wet or dry.

When I went from Anakees over to Tourances, I was nothing more than staggered at the differance. The handling was transformed, in fact so great was the change I even took the bike back to the dealer coz I thought something was wrong!

Too much throttle in the wet?

I had a set of Trailmax D607 tyres by Dunlop on mine when I bought it. A broken off Stanley blade through the rear put paid to them, and I had Tourances fitted.

I do prefer the Tourances, but I did manage to spin up the rear wheel during a deluge through Ashton on the way to William's for a service. It was as I set off from a set of traffic lights. I set off fairly gently, but in what could have only been a split second I thought the revs sounded a bit high for the apparent slow speed, and then the rear started to swing out to the left hand side

I rolled off the throttle and then when I stopped at the next set of lights, the taxi driver next to me was giving me funny looks. I took my time even more than normal after that. My choice of courtesy bikes was an R1200S or an F650GS.... I took the 650 :o

Never had too much of a problem with Anakee`s and find them more grippy than Tourances in the dry at least.

Done some big mileages on Anakees and haven`t had a problem wet or dry. They were fitted on my 1200ADV when it was new and on my first trip, went from Santander to Madrid in very heavy rain and didn`t slip slide anymore than I would expect from the bike which after all, isn`t a GP bike going round corners.

Also had then on fo Steptoe`s Morrocan Dash and we went through the lot from heavy, heavy rain to very hot tarmac and again no issues. Bloody dreadful if you go slightly off road though as I found out:eek:

Maybe it`s all down to rider feel and what we expect from a tyre because IMHO, no major manufacturer could afford to sell dodgy tyres....

Can`t comment on TKC`s though but just fitted a set to my 1100GS and they feel OK at present.
