knobbly consumption

i had a look at an adv yesterday. its got 4000km on the clock.
the back knobbly has only about 1mm of tread (knob?) on it. this seems a bit excessive to me.
i don't know how the bike was ridden, maybe the previous owner locked up the back wheel all the time or done rolling burnouts.
what sort of mileage is normal for tarmac use on the knobblies?

the salesman said he could "maybe perhaps" get a new back tire thrown in the deal. what is good road tire for it?

from what i understand the boxer motors can stand a fair amount of abuse, (well my r80st can). is there anything obvious to look for if it has been abused?

Toucan, you'll be lucky to see more than 2K miles from a rear knobbly, 1mm probably won't even get you home. I certainly wouldn'y worry that the wear level indicates abuse of the bike in any way. Definitly insist on a nice new hoop prior to purchase

Best knobblies for general use seem to be Conti TCk 80's but if you want higher mileage from them and can sacrifice some off road ability go for Metzler Tourance

If you search on this forum under tyres you'll find load of differing views though......

It should be pointed out that this is due to the weight of the rider and not the result of extreme riding

Stop doing Stoppies that is what is killing your front tyre

My DR knocks a rear out in 3000 miles and fronts in 6000.

Dependant on weight and riding style 2-3k miles is the norm for a TKC, unless you're Vern, ride like a poof and get 4k!!! 1mm is the legal minimum for tread depth and a dealer is committing an offence if he/she sells a bike to you with illegal tyres. If you do buy it, insist on a new tyre.

the dealer has said he will put new tyres on. i asked for road (as in GS std type) coz i don't think i'll ever do supercross.
they sed they are putting bridgestone trailwings on (i wasn't listening properly, but they are brdgestones). are they any good?

Bridgestone's speed up steering response, and are great in the dry. Unfortunately they're awful in the wet and the rear squares off after about 2.5K.

but they do stop people now and then for speaking on a phone while driving.

ps. the traffic cops (spietkops - trans. speed cops) in tswane (what used to be called pretoria) ride 1150GS bikes. need spares?

Don't have to be a hooligan, just in a hurry.
My brother has a mechanical affinity, and on the same bike or car has on many occasions been able to bet better mileages and tyre wear than me. Yet, had a 1100GS out on demo once for a weekend when I still had my 1100R, and on either bike he kicked my ass..... He doesn ride permanently like I do, but has always had this irritating ability to kick my ass.
Maybe it's opperator specific.....

I've just taken a set of TKC 80's off after 11,000 Klm's. I get along at a reasonable rate of knots.

The main consideration for these types of tyres with flexible knobs sticking out is accelleration. If you twist the noise maker like crazy, then the tyres just fall apart.

The best I've seen is a brand new set on an 1150 that had it's knobs ripped off and the rest rubbed down after 750 Klm's. I was on the same ride and traversed the same terrain but my tyres weren't showing wear like his. Basically he just span the rear wheel up rock face type hills, I just followed the black tracks that he left.
