My 02 R1150GSA with 75,000 miles had a knocking noise from the left hand side of the engine when hot. I have changed the cam chain tensioner for the modified part. The knocking is still present but much quieter, however there is now a loud squealing noise until the oil warms up:(

Has anyone any ideas what to try next?

Is your alternator belt loose?

Have retensioned the alternator belt - made no difference. The squealing sounds like it is coming from lower down at the front of the engine

Could well be the alternator front bearing - that was making a squealing noise on mine when cold that disappeared when the engine warmed up. Actually it didn't do it initially after starting (charging light still on) but as soon as the revs came up and the charging light went out the squealing started. A squirt of WD40 (avoiding the belt and pulleys) got rid of the squeak but WD40 is thin so that won't last long. It rattles too (play in the bearing, I guess) but I don't reckon it'll fail suddenly so I've decided to live with it until it gets to bad that I can't avoid changing the alternator.

If it is a squealing alternator bearing prove it by taking the alternator belt off and running her up :thumb2

Thanks for all the suggestions, have now part exed the bike so it will be someone elses problem.
