Planning a trip for next year with the following route in mind.
Day 1 : Rotterdam to Baden Baden
Day 2 : Baden Baden to Garmisch
Day 3 : Garmisch to Lake Garda
Day 4 : Day around Lake Garda.
Day 5 : Lake Garda to Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen
Day 6 : Interlaken to Verdun
Day 7 : Verun to Rotterdam.

Leaning more to B&Bs, with this in mind can anyone recommend any decent b&b's for, Garmisch and Lake Garda (thinking of staying at Salo).
Or if you have been camping in this area.
Many Thanks.

Honestly - it's fun :rob

Nice trip you have planned :)

Salo is a lovely spot, its packed with bikes at the weekend at the far side of the lake from the town. Loads of lads hooning around on their latest italian toys, posing :)

Interlaken is nice enough but its also worth parking up and getting the cable car to Gimmelwald, its pedestrianized but lovely and you get to see some of the best peaks in the Alps.

Just a thought.

Day 4 : Day around Lake Garda.

Won't comment on the B&B aspect of things to which I'll let others offer their suggestions. However, regarding the one day around Lake Garda I recommend the following:_

A.M. Ride along the water front as far as Garda (if travelling from the North - we stayed in Nago at Hotel Toresella) and just prior to entering Garda itself turn left. This will take you up onto the Monte Baldo high road and eventually return you to Nago. Beautiful road, beautiful scenery.

P.M. Again, if you're starting from the in or around Nago then take the route to Lago Ledro, then onto Lago Idro, then onto Lago di Valvestino following the road down the mountain to the town of Gargano. Turn right on the main road and after a few metres turn left into the the back road of Gargano. Follow this road along and after 2-3 minutes you'll come to a nice small harbour. Very picturesque and a good stop for a small tipple. Only a small one mind you before jumping back on the bikes and following the West side of the lake road back to Nago.

You'll find videos of these tours on my YT site http://www.youtube.com/user/AlanIvideos?feature=mhum

Lauterbrunnen.... http://valleyhostel.ch (stay in chalet not hostel) Not B&B but half the price of the hotels and yes, take the cable care up from Lauterbrunnen, walk to Murren, cable car via Gimmelwald down to Stechelberg and walk back along the valley to Lauterbrunnen... Simply awesome

Baden Baden...... As many would recommend Pension Williams in Seebach is perfect :thumb

Tusky, on the date I'm looking at the chalet is not available, only the hostel. Would you still recommend booking the hostel?

Thanks, Easy.

From memory, they have about four doubles, two twins (bunks) and a single in the Chalet part. The Hostel has a double and a few dorms. The double in the hostel is fine.... Just tell them what you need, they speak perfect English.

Personally I would never want to share a dorm but the facilities are very good for the price. There seem to be a lot of Koreans that stay these days, so I would advise a no dogs policy ;)

Good luck

If you stay in lauterbrunen I would recccommend taking a helicopter flight from the landing base in the valley. It's a fantastic experience flying over the glaciers, we even dropped off supplies to some of the mountain refuges up top. It was expensive but we were out for almost two hours, including a big snowball fight on a glacier with a group of climbers :)

for what its worth, the Hotel Oberland in Lauterbrunnen has always been good value, however there is always the Bahnhoff hotel, the whole area is beautiful and well worth a visit, it is also very close to some of the best passes as well :D

Thanks for that & all recommendations, I have booked the hostel, as there are 7 of us the dorm for 8 should do. However thinking of paying for an extra 8th person to have the room exclusive!
Also booked Pension Williams & Two Wheel Moorings as I have stayed at both before and can highly recommend them.
Just got to book Garmisch & Salo.
Hopefully I will submit a trip report on returning :type

That should make it good value from money..... Yup the dorms are pretty new by Swiss standards and you have access to cooker, fridge, kettles, toaster and BBQ, if you ask, I am sure they would allow you to have dorm to yourselves at no extra coast. If you arrive late and need to buy food or booze Camping Jungfrau has a well stocked shop that closes around 9:00pm (even on Sundays) and the Coop opens about 8:00am. The hostel has extended the parking, so bikes are not a problem at all and theft or tampering in unheard of ;)

For Verdun:-

Fantastic value, and very nice too, stopped here every year since 2009, and back again next year.

A bit south of Baden

From Baden this is about 30 minutes down the best section of the B500, very reasonable cost. You can easily reach Garmisch from here, a nice little run down the rest of the B500 and then follow along the East shore of Lake Constance.

You could also work a few of these passes into the end of the day.

Furkajoch

Faschinajoch

Hochtannbergpass

Hahntennjoch

Fernpass

Holzleitensattel

Ammersattel

There are a lot more smaller places appearing on web sites such as hotels.com, last year we booked all of the "new" (to us) Hotels for Route Des Grand Alpes from one website and the average cost was about £65 for B&B (Two of us)

If your not in a large group you could just find somewhere to stay when you feel like stopping each day

If you heading north towards Bormio from Lake Garda, then I would recommend the Gavia Pass (SS300). It is one of my favourites and one of my wife's hates as there really is space only for a car and a skinny biker on the switchbacks when approaching from the South.

From there, Livigno - Julierpass - Oberalp - Andermatt - Furka - Grimsel - Lauterbrunnen but that is a pretty long days riding, so you may elect to use the Italian Motorway but I know which way I would go :D

The other option from Lake Garda being the SP9 - Lake Idra - SS237 - SS669 - SS345 then pick your route towards Chur. Again, this is a LONG days riding !

I always plan a few routes for each day, that way if the weather is great you can meander over half a dozen passes, but if it is not so good you have a variety of options, and sometimes one side of a valley will be dry whilst over the mountain it is wet, I just look at the forecast last minute and take the best route for the days conditions.

Gavia is on my "must do" list for this year., it will be at the end of the day, but if weather is poor I may stop just before in the hope of the follwoing day dawning brighter - the advantage of not pre-booking all your Hotels.

Julier is great, fast as Alpine roads go, but plenty twisty enough to not be boring - greatly underated IMO
