Hi all,
I`m experiencing some fairly serious gear selection problems and I`m a bit worried my gearbox is in trouble! :(
Symptoms are: Select first, pull away, if lucky, I can get all gears but many times I am going for the next gear and there is no resistance at gear lever.
It is like when you go for first and sometimes it will not engage until you let out the clutch a little. It did it recently once or twice going for fourth and I thought nothing of it, just "worked the lever" until it went in. Then it did it on the way home just the once and I had to pull over and do some more box working but got home ok. Then for a few days I had no problem at all. This morning it went completely! Still got to get home later. Crossing my fingers :( Just checked a minute ago and got all gears when going very slowly down the road.
Soooo, do any of you have any suggestions for "known issues" please? I have checked the lever linkage and it`s OK, splined connection is tight and the lever seems to be free.
Thanks in advance, yours very worried about my box :)

I am sure this could be quite a serious issue but....

Have you checked the external linkage is clean, lubricated, free and not fouling anything?

Agreed! I kept hitting false neutrals and it was jumping out of gear, I read on here somewhere about the linkage so I stipped it all down cleaned and lubed it up. Result was the box was as fresh as the day it came out the showroom.

Fankyou folks,
I will be crossing my fingers and doing a linkage strip down later then, if I can make it home that is! :D

Job done, result as above, NICE :thumb Visions of exploding gearboxes have now subsided, phew! ;)

This is what I love about this site, the useful info. I haven't had any problems with my linkages, but I'll give them a strip + clean just as a precaution.

Same problem as every one else! tried to strip the linkage but not to confident, I removed the circlip type thingy, but it would apear to take quite some force to seperate the two, what is the next step?

Hit it hard to seperate, or pry apart - the linkage that seizes is the bolt that goes through the gearlever into the footrest hanger. There's a bush inside the gearlever that corrodes and stops the lever returning fully, no amount of spraying with WD40 will reach the part that the corrosion has built up on -

If you have a Y piece fitted, you don't even have to remove the footrest to get to the offending part, you have enough room to unbolt it from behind.

Rub the bush down with some abrasive paper, and use lots of grease ( marine grease or mobil sythn red grease) and put it back together.

Just clean your balls and sockets  - make sure there is now grease or crud in there . Wipe it all nice and clean the put some fresh grease in and pop it all back together.....don't forget the little clip ;)

Thanks steptoe, I,v just put the bike away so it will be next weekend when i,ll have a go at it, is copper grease any good for the job?

Take a look at your gear lever. There is a 'linkage'(metal rod thing with a ball shaped bit at either end) that goes from the lever to another lever that goes into the gearbox underneath.
It seems, as Steptoe pointed out, that the problem area is the pivot point of the lever itself. It gets stiff then the lever does not spring back to centre and you have trouble selecting gears. A get you home solution is to re-centre the lever after each gear change :thumb

Use a non petroleum based grease as oils attack the material the lever pivot bushing is made out of!
