Hi
i currently ride a BMW R1150gs and G650 Xcountry.
i bought the 650 xcountry because i wanted something more 'fun' and lighter than the 1150gs.

i test rode a mate's BMW F800GS, and i like the size and the fact that this bike is 'fun'. not too heavy etc ... before taking the plunge and ordering one for me i am considering another option - a new KTM 1190 Adventure R.
unfortunately my local dealer does not have an 1190 R to sit on and check out.
how is the physical size when compared the the BMW F800gs please?
Also when compared to a KTM 990 Adventure? which i beleive is very similar in size and weight to the F800.
is it bigger? i want a bike that easy to handle and quick to respond to riders inputs.

i am selling the 1150gs because i feel like this bike is too huge and unwieldy for me.

hoping that the 1190R will be fun just like a big Xcountry :)

thank you

I've got an 800 that I've toured extensively and tricked up wrt suspension etc. Have ridden the 990 and 1190 too. The 800 is a superb bike and would be my go-to RTW bike. In fact, all 3 of these will make good RTW bikes. I wouldn't want to use the 990 because it is horribly thirsty compared to the other 2. I have abused my 8 to high heaven and it soaks up everything and cannot fault it. If I was to have one bike, it would be the 1190R. It's a do-it-all bike, is hugely powerful, but feels like it'll perform brilliantly off-road too. As it happens, my 800 is now too high mileage and abused to get any trade in value, so it will be permanently shod with knobblies and I'll probably buy the new 1200GSA in April as I want a more road orientated bike capable of 2-up touring, although still undecided between it and the 1190R. All 3 bikes are similar in height and size, handle well, and are A LOT of fun. The 1190 has taken things to a new level wrt electronics etc and my choice based on riding all of them and my needs would be in order:
1. 1190R
2. 800
3. 990
ps., would have no desire to own the standard 1190, even with its extra ESA stuff. It doesn't move me when I look at it, and that's important too. Hope this helps.

thank you for your reply.
i agree with you on the fact that the 1190 adventure R moves me, even though the standard 1190 is basically the same bike, just like you it does not move me.

how do you compare the f800 and the 1190R as regards seat height?
i was fine with the 800gs with low seat which is around 860mm.
i read somewhere i can fit the ergo seat to the adventure R to get a slightly lower height?

is this true?

No probs. They are similar in height, but at 6'1 it's not really something I thought about. I would go for the Ergo seat anyway as it's a little more comfy and heated. You won't be disappointed in the R, it's a whip of a bike and will leave you smiling every time you ride it.

thank you. looking forward to my new adventure R !

enjoy the uber slow steering 21" wheel that comes with it :tarka

Isnt the plastic and everything the same?
Are people really moved by different colour paint ?
sheeeeesh

That'll be why Bike mag said the R was a better bike to ride on road then the standard bike.
I had a new KTM 950 Adv S in 2004 with a 21" front wheel and the steering definately ain't slow.

Go for the R-if I was buying a new bike the 1190R would be the only thing I would splash out for.

It doesn't feel like it steers slow at all, I'll be doing a track day on mine come summer back to back with my race bike, I recon there won't be much in lap times!!

Well mine steers a lot slower than my sports bike , a bad comparison I admit , but the longer wheel base and the 19" wheel steer slow so I imagine the bigger wheel being slightly slower

Don't get me wrong , I am almost certain sub 2 minute laps round oulton will be a piece of cake , but the bigger front wheel was considered too much for me personally

Everything else including the paint looks awesome on the R and everyone is different

As for chippy wood from bike , he's entitled to his opinion.......he takes great photos but I disagree with some of his critique about the bikes based on my own experience

The R seat is quite thin compared to the ergo one, so the height will go up I would think :)

The F800GS has a Seat height of 35.0 in standard; low seat 33.9 in. (available as accessories and/or factory options)

The 1190 adv R seat height is a fixed 35 inch.

The standard 1190 has a 33.8 -34.5 adjustable seat height.

I have a 950 adv S and it's tall. When I sat on the 1190 I thought it was to low for me on its tallest setting.

Haven't yet been on an adv R yet but I wouldn't buy an 1190 adv yet. It's to early days with this new Bike. Problems are starting to show and one of the biggest is that the air box doesn't seal right so when you in the dust and sand it gets through into the engine. Causing wear and engine damage.

Type in ktm 1190 adv problem sand into to you tube and you'll see a video of three lads all with 1190's all with the same problem on the same trip.

I had a new KTM 950 Adv S in 2004 with a 21" front wheel and the steering definately ain't slow.

Not the same size wheels/tyres though, 990 is 90/90x21 and the 1190 is 2.50x21.

Having had both size on my Harley there was a hell of difference in handling between the two, the smaller was by far quick steering and felt less steady on the road, I dont suppose that "dual sport" tyres with have the same variation in tyre widths as with the road tyres on the harley but there will be a difference.
