KTM 1290 Super Adventure - anyone?

The GSA has sticky out engines, which gives you far better leg protection than the KTM. Is there any chance that this has minimised your injuries ?

I think you may well be right. The cover over the left pot was badly ruptured. Thankfully my partners left leg and mine did not suffer the same fate. If the below link works it should take you to the local press report and you will see the damaged n/s pannier. Again that could have been my partners leg.

Returning to the subject of bikes which is why we are all hear, my replacement will probably be another GSA. I await with interest, as in couple weeks time it should be made known what updates will be made to the GS/GSA for 2016. (Will it have the suspension package from the XR?) Whilst I like the KTM for its engine, suspension and lack of popularity, the MTS for that single sided swingarm and gloss black spoked rear wheel (is that not bike art?) and the GSA for its presence and being the Swiss Army knife that it is - my replacement will probably be another GSA. Particularly if my partner is to (understandably) get back on a bike, then it will only so on the back of another.

Wow, I was surprised at the damage to the lorry.

I'm glad you're here to tell the story, that must have been terrible. I can understand why you'd want another GSA, as it probably saved your lives.:thumb

Thanks Nutty. A month on still not sure has sunk in how lucky we were.

Its very clear to see that the heads, crash bars and boxes have been in a big punch up with that lorry. What sort o a fight could the KTM offer :nenau

it would have been half a mile further up the road and missed the lorry altogether ;)

I have had a 13 &15 GS for past 2 years. Rode the 1290 last week, just for an hour.

I found it pretty comfortable, easy to balance and handle and quick to turn, uber powerful when needed, surefooted and well planted.

The seat height was a bit higher and I could not quite flatfoot it which doesn't help. Of course it is shit quick when you need it and fairly easy to handle when giving it some and the front does not dive much under heavy braking. The modes and controls/menus are fairly easy to access and change settings, even on the move, not as easy as the GS with dedicated buttons though. The seat felt a bit like sitting on a flat surface and I imagined it would become uncomfortable after a few hours?

The engine on the 1290 was pretty smooth considering it's V twin config. I did not experience any obvious wide range vibes in any particular RPM range which was good. Gear changes were smooth, brakes are Brembo so no problem there and the electronic suspension did a great job of keeping the bike level fore and aft under loads.

When I got back on my 15 I did not miss the power of the KTM and the GS still just has that all round comfort with enough power and sharp handling. The 1290 is a great bike, I reckon if I rode a 1290 that I could wean myself off the GS in about a week and my view would be completely different :)

Taking the S1000XR out next week, my XR allocation is due on 12 July, but I might stay with the GS, see how she test rides I guess.
