Hi all

i am currently traveling south america on a KTM 690 Enduro and have a problem..

engine noise ticking very rapidly turned into a full melt down from the bike

i am some what mechanically inclined so i set to work.. to try to see what the hell had happened..

I was quite sure that this was a valve issue. took off the head to reveal a super f**ked Valve Rocker Bearing that has stripped it’s self and seized.. also damaging the Valve Cams too..

As i can tell there dos not appear to be any other damage done to any other parts..

my questions for anyone who can help is would this have done any other damage to the motor... i.e. the piston, cylinder etc... this is not an easy thing too tear down to check..

and other than ordering a new Rocker Arm and Valve Cam what else does anybody recomend i should replace with these..

many thanks

James

Why's it happened? Oil level, condition, feed? Oil pump? I don't know KTMs but you need to find out why it's happened or it will happen again.
Good Luck

hi dean it's happened prob because it's done 65,000miles and was needing the new part.. the oil feed, pump etc.. are all good..

i am just curious if this would have damaged anything else..???

thanks

It looks very similar to the 640 LC4 set up.
I change both cam followers as part of preventative maintenance as the inlet (which is narrower) can fail like your exhaust (?) one has.

You should change the other cam follower as a matter of course but BE SURE to carefully but effectively centre punch around both edges of the roller pin else it move out causing big problems.

If you're not happy to do that then change both rocker arms which come with the followers pre fitted but probably around £130 each!

Check the rocker end float, it's adjusted with shims.

Use a correct sealer for the rocker cover as there's no gasket and perhaps overhaul the water pump whilst it's accesable.

EDIT: just seen your post of 65,000 miles, you've been lucky I would have changed my cam followers 4 times by then and still have a cam shaft:D

Valve to piston contact is unlikely, so damage below the cylinder head i doubt has happened.
Sure, the rocker roller has seized first and burnt the lobe off the cam, both components now are fucked. but fair play, the miles are impressive for a KTM motor... and yes, I'm not a fan of the orange lemons, but respect due there.:thumb2
I'd go for a new cam obviously, and as Tim says, new rocker and rollers too.

if you are going to take the head off, I'd put a set of piston rings on the slug whilst there, at only the cost of the rings plus a base gasket.....
Best of luck dude.....
T.
