KTM 890 SMT

Sorry mate - I confess I turned off before the end. Couldn't listen to him any longer - where's Neevesy when you need him.

I I've seen a few others and nobody (else) has mentioned it - I thought maybe KTM were playing it down so it doesn't steal sales from the Adventure model.

I did the same dont know why he wasnt a bad presenter I just lost interest

I thought he was very good on camera

I know the feeling . Stopped watching a Guzzi vid after 60 seconds of bloody music intro ….:-)

Yeah, I can't watch any onboard footage from YouTube motorcycle touring vids if they've dubbed music all over it. Gimme engine and wind sound, much more realistic

Looks good enough to me (almost) a couple of typical KTM cock ups IMHO.

Already everyone moaning about the seat when KTM want it to be the best Sport Tourer, nobody is buying this as a supermoto, so why the supermoto seat, then a small tank - two things that they could improve without putting off any potential customers and opening it up to people like me, considering coming down from 1200cc+ bikes.

To me, the 690 SMC will be what a supermoto guy wants, the duke for the sportsbike rider, has to be the adventure if you want to tour as it has range and weather protection, so who on earth will this bike really be ideal for? Add comfier seat, a couple more litres of fuel and a bit more weather protection and Bingo!!!!

"Demo Mode" on features is backfiring, I get the idea and was miffed at not being able to try them on demo bikes, but the general public and press see it as a bit of a con, as opposed to the "free trial" KTM think they are offering, it is seen as a kind of blackmail.

Maybe they will get it sorted for the 990 version

Oy I resemble that remark !....whats wrong with smooth jazz elevator music :-)

Loved my 950/SM a few years back , actually looking for another minter , but hard to find . For me that’s what this should have been , a v twin with loads of grunt . This does nothing for me .

I think I'll be keeping my 2011 SMT for a long time yet. It may be a bit rough (engine) in comparison to this, but I prefer the sound and feel of a V Twin over a parallel any day. Still will probably try and get a test ride to see what the fuss is all about.

He forgot to say after 5 miles you will need surgical treatment on the Piles the seat has given you.

I don't really know what I want bike wise these days. I used to chase all these new offerings, pour over YT videos and reviews, convince myself that life would be better with the new one, then end up getting it. Now I just look at stuff, read reviews and YT offerings, wait a while, then realize that the 1290 S I've got just does everything I need a road bike to do.

I test rode the 1290 S in 2017 I think, decided that it was everything my 990SMT was, and more. I loved the SMT, but it had to go. Now the 21 1290 is so much more again. It feels small between the legs and has a ton of fun in it. Unless you want to track day this 890 I just don't see the point in it. It lacks the power, rider/pillion comfort, wind protection, range and versatility of it's big brother. As some have said and I agree, it's a bit pointless to the majority of buyers. Very niche.

Well, if you never go two-up or do long motorway miles / big tours it probably makes more sense, factor in it is a few grand cheaper to buy etc it looks OK.

More likely to have people with SD GT's thinking of a downsize than those of us on 1290 Adventures?

Or even those who have been buying 790 / 890 adventures as road touring machines.

Will give one a whiz next summer as with a young kid I am no longer doing 3 euro trips a year and have crashed from over 6,000 miles a year to under 3,000, with maybe 4-7 days of tourng a year down from 20+, and with that change the long 2 day slogs out to the Alps have gone.

With the state of the world and war on ICE vehicles / personal vehicle ownership I could see me maybe only buying 2 more bikes in my "riding lifetime", so maybe a smaller one for 5-6 years, then see what I can still clamber on / manage before a final ICE bike prior to them being removed from sale, I will then ride that until the fuel is no longer sold road-side.

I suspect the big 1300C V-Twins will dissapear, KTM look to be moving to the parallel twin rapidly, the current 1290 lump probably won't manage another round of Euro-Emissions nonsense - at least without shedding torque / power and everything we like about it.

Maybe a V4 will solve that issue? I suspect that is why Ducati have gone V4 for big bikes?

The usual single pannier and bloody expensive double-skinned plastic exhaust cover, which you can open up and use as a trouser press.

I've been having impure thoughts about selling my GS and possibly the X-Country and buying an SMT. I tried phoning the KTM dealership this afternoon but there was no-one available in sales.

So I messaged the owner of the dealership who I've know for a long time. He told me that KTM have allocated one SMT per dealership and the whole allocation for 2023 is sold out.

He suggested putting in an order for next year now.

Chopsie loves it
