Thinking of trading in my old V reg 1150gs for something a bit sprightly... Love the gs but am pineing for the 990.

I do most of my own spannering servicing etc.

I have a few questions which no doubt will have been asked before so here goes:

Looking to stretch out to the Balkans next year are the bike reliable any issues that needs addressing when looking?

In regard to servicing are they easy enough to work on?

Electrikery any issues compilcations to be aware of....

Im planning on going fairly deep into the Balkans to visit some locations that I served at during the war so wanna get the bike this year and get used to it both from a riding perspective and mechanically.

Any advice welcome and appreciated.

Easy enough to work on after you have mastered the art of removing and refitting the fuel tanks. Easy to master after a couple of times.
Water pumps are prone to leaking water into the oil. I would do that job along with oil and filter etc. Plenty of info on YouTube on how to fit a water pump kit, if you are not mechanically minded I would pay someone to do it. The exhaust pipe to the silencers corrodes and worth checking.
Can't think of any other issues apart from the usual maintenance stuff ie brakes/tyres etc.

Think latest 'Bike Magazine' has an article all about the 950-990's and some of their known foibles, including when some bits were upgraded to fix some of the common issues.

Google ‘orange crush’ on advrider all the info you will require.

My advise would be ride a bit here before you go,if it seems good , then just go ,no worries.

My guess is a late model will have come with most common issues fixed, and an earlier one will have probably had them fixed by now.

But if I was buying I would look for a late model with low miles just so it is a bit fresher, give it a good check and service and off you go.

There is far less to go wrong on the older KTM's (just as there is less to go wrong on the older GS's)

Get at least the 2011 model as it runs smoother around town. I did 56,000 miles in 18 months on mine - Ushuaia to Prudhoe Bay Alaska: not one issue. I had my fork seals changed in Canada as a precaution and serviced at the correct intervals at various dealers on the way. This was expensive with the 4000 mile intervals. Wonderful bike.
