KTM are Toast ?

Does not help that even the modified parts don't appear to be cutting the mustard. Shame as I've ridden both the 790 and 890 Adventures and they are cracking bikes.

I had one of the first 790 Adventures and it spent more time at the dealer's garage than mine. Didn't put me off as I realised it was a bit of a lemon and probably isolated incidents, so I had no bother buying the Duke - which gave me no trouble at all. But my confidence is severely dented now with the brand

It’s an issue because even though it’s been known about for years as you say KTM ignored it for years. That’s the issue. Decades is a bit strong unless you’re talking about Honda and of course they handled it a bit better than KTM handled their camshaft issue. JJH
I was thinking of Honda, but I'm sure all ICE designers have always known that camshaft wear is a potential issue and have clearly found ways of mitigating it (sufficient oil supply etc) Seems odd to me that in 2024 some companies still fall foul of this.

I suppose most manufacturers try to make things as cheap as possible. So they cut specs and lower quality to what they can get away with. Think of chrome plating. Anything from the 60s/70s would still be held together by the plating. Chrome of today? Don’t even try to polish it. There are stories of accountants insisting that a slightly inferior but cheaper metal be used in crucial components to save a penny. Witness big end bolt failure. JJH

Is it incorrect material (unlikely I'd have thought) or incorrect hardening of the lobes or insufficient lubrication? I don't suppose KTM will ever tell us.

Pretty sure its insufficient lubrication.
Then maybe it is a oilway design error (I would have thought unlikley as KTM have designed a lot of engines) or a manufacturing QC thing leaving oilways ways partially blocked. Either way an expensive error.

More to do with quality control or the lack of.
FCMoto use the same engine, made/built by FVM in China, yet you don't hear the same complaints about their motors

And how about buying what looks like a pre registered sheer bargain right now - throwing £12k at them for a 1290, only for them to go pop in 3 months time, cease to exist and you have a bike with no warranty, no backup or spares and several sensor/electrical/faults/ gremlins ?

That’s just become a very expensive garden ornament that even the most competent home mechanics have no chance of resolving in my view.

Worse - I can’t see the business case for any of the car companies to bail them out right now. They have their own EV / ICE global crises to manage at the moment.

I think they are toast.
A Chinese co will buy the name.
I'm not in any way an abusive person but this is such a crap post 😂 😂 😂

Why don't the doomsday people in here just leave and form your own 'oh no we're all gonna die' chat. 😂

Sure KTM have massive issues right now. But how about we just wait and see what unfolds. Nobody will be left with 'garden ornaments' - wake up chap.

Every day is a bonus day. Enjoy it and stop making like our lives are over. Unless my 390 Adv R doesn't arrive, in which case I'm off to the nearest clifftop.

No - we have got to keep the negativity going - how else am I going to be able to get a brand new 890 Adventure R for peanuts :augie

Why would we keep quiet about a major event like this? It’s not going to fix itself if everyone pretends it’s not happening. I know there’s an argument that we could make it worse. Censorship isn’t going to fix it. We haven’t got to the bottom of this yet. JJH

If only KTM had sought engine design approval from the UKGS Instant Expert squad they wouldn’t be in this mess …..
