KTM or Husqvarna 250 or 300???

Ah Nathan - That's incorrect! You know I also have interactions with perfectly flat, smooth & well maintained tarmaced surfaces too.

I found some options today:

1) 08 KTM 300exc. 2 Stroke. 96hrs, raced, had recent engine rebuild by KTM dealer, and apparently maintained meticulously. Electric & kick start. No warranty. £2,700.

2) March 2011 KTM 250 EXC 4 Stroke. Electric & kick start. 21 hours. No warranty. £4,800

3) New Husqvarna TE250. 4 Stroke. Electric & kick start. 2 yr warranty. £5,200

Option 3 with 2 yr warranty seems very appealing....

Re option 3 I'd want to know what are the servicing costs/frequency and who is allowed to service it?

I've ridden a couple of these and if it wasn't for the fact that I have a 45 minute road ride before I hit the trails up here I'd have one in a flash.

VERY light and flickable, happy to trickle along at low revs and very tractable but can be a hooligan tool if you want it to be. Carrying a small bottle of 2T oil wouldn't bother me. I am biased though as I love 2-strokes :)

And? don't keep us in suspense :D

Well I decided to get Tangoed and go for a used 250 EXC-F (four stroke).

Got it from my local dealer (KTM Centre in Hemel Hempstead). V pleasant dealings with them so far....long may it continue; hell, they even let me have a go on it. Price was reasonable.

Hopefully I'll like it ! If not, well, will shift it on but will at least try a year on it. I just couldn't bring myself to go down the 2t route just yet.

Let the piss taking begin...

Right - time to think about some weekend trips to Wales.

Its a March 2011 bike with 20 hours on it.

Loving the weight (or lack of it), and the handling. Much more my thing - being much close to a mountain bike !

Very impressed with the power and torque, plus delivery seems to be very linear. Sits at 60mph on the road and some more throttle to go. No idea what the top speed is yet but I don't really care. Begs the question, why would I need a bigger bike?

Looks the business. The 250s are good for the tight nadgery bits on Enduros. Haven't ridden one in ages so I can't remember what they are like on the long fire roads - but as you say, if it sits at 60mph without buzzing or shaking itself to pieces then it looks like it is the way forward (as you say - why would you want anything else?)

WOW - tasty, tasty, very very tasty!!

Look forward to seeing you on a ride soon - as long as you promise not to wear your lounge suit in your camper van!
