Having had my fingers burnt with poor reliability on both my 12RT's I'm going to be moving to another make when the time comes. Although that's likely to be in 12 months or so I do like to take my time considering all the options, pondering & prevaricating, umming & aahing due to my OCD.
I fancy something slightly different from a touring bike so have been looking at the Adventure bike market but don't want to end up with another bike I can't rely on.
For me, Honda is the obvious choice but I just don't love the look of the CrossTourer, no matter how hard I try, nor does Yamaha's Super Ten. do it for me. I don't want a Triumph which leaves me with KTM. On paper I really like the look of the 1190 R but don't want to get my fingers burnt buying European again (which is why I've ruled out Ducati) & there is also the niggle in the back of my mind that was put there by the 'Long way Round' (I know, I know but I did mention my OCD).

I'll be buying the bike for European/American trips of 2-3 weeks at a time. There will be motorway riding involved with a view to getting to, and riding, some good twisty stuff. Comfort is obviously paramount, I'm coming from RT's after all, as is weather protection & decent mpg. I would also like to maybe do some weekend green laning in this country.

So my simple questions are these. Are KTM's reliable? How is the build quality? I'm not likely to be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire am I?

Thanx in advance.

I don't own one, nor have I in the past, but I have a friend who has 2x990 Adv's and one of them is nearly at 80k miles. It is very reliable and he raves about them (hence why he has two). However, the 990 does suffer a little from corrosion and can look rough surprisingly quickly (eg spokes) and of course, being chain drive you will need to maintain that on your trip (scottoiler?).

I am seriously thinking about the 1190 as my next bike - not for a while yet though ....:blagblah

I ran a KTM 990 for a year , loved it , had a few bits and bobs to fix , and fueling was bit jerky at lower speeds , pretty sure thats all fixed on the new one though......really engaging machine :blagblah

Had a 950 and 990 SM . Both of them had a beautiful build quality , well put together and were corrosion resistant . The chains did not need much adjustment , a regular lube was all they needed . The 990 was a bit on/off in throttle response .The 950 was awesome . i think you'll find them pretty good ,

Thanx for the replies chaps, really appreciate it. While I'm on the subject has anyone had any dealings with Gear4 in Market Deeping?

I bought my first Husaberg there. Couldn't fault them (but I couldn't fault the KTM Centre in Hemel where I bought my current 'Berg either).

GEAR 4

Bought my 1190 from paul in sales good service and he did as he said he would so in this day and age thats good in my book.
Bike has now done 6k and not a single problem everything going good with the bike and it just gets better the more i use it .

Had a 990 adv for a couple of years. The slow speed fuelling wasnt just bad, it was awful. Didnt have any bad unreliability but then I havent had with the BM either. In the end I went back to a GS because it had more character and was IMO a better bike.

Why dont you want Triumph? I have little doubt that they are better built than BM these days,

Have owned more than a dozen KTMs in last 10 years or so.

Problems-head gasket went on 950 Adv S and clutch cable snapped on early Duke-otherwise nothing !

KTM reliability is much bett than BMW and most other brands.
