The video does not really give you an appreciation of how tight the hairpins at the bottom are, especially travelling upwards on a fully loaded GS with a pillion  They are truly horrible to ride, although much easier on my VFR800 in tbe dry solo in 2005. The unsurfaced hairpins weren't too bad, although a little bit slippery in places on the GS in p*ssing rain.

There is a really crap pass just south of Sky Moritz going into Italy - the Spulgen - don't bother - it is rubbish

The "Rubbish" Splugen Pass

Also one of the top rated passes according to King Of The Alps

The Stelvio is obviously shite as well, note how busy it is on a Sunny Saturday in early August, shocking

And look how f**** off my mate is having to ride this awful road, here he can be seen gesticulating wildly to show his anger at my choice of route

IMGP1085.jpg

I think what really ruined it was it had snowed the night before and the top few hundred metres had snow at the roadside and the cafe patio had some snow piled up which obviously ruined the day even more

IMGP1069.jpg

when we were in our digs before the stelvio was told it had been shut due to snow (sept 12) they had it open by mid day had best laugh of the hol well worth the effort even if just to tick the box, but doubt i would do it again unless one of the party insisted. the dirt track on the umbrio had me laughing out loud about my limit off roading on a gsa.

let them experts believe whatever they want ........I have done them again and again and again and the only let down I have experienced is traffic ( normally foreigners who hate the road ) :ronno

Whats whether I have ridden it got to do with the so called bad press? Nothing ! So what is this bad press?

OK, thanks Cooperman. I read the post you link points to. To be honest, I still don't get what the issues are. The write up just makes me want to do it in both directions. But then have done quite a bit of off road on both 1200GS & a 250 Pogo and spent a fair bit of time on tight hair pin switchback passes in the Pyrenees fully loaded with knobblies on.

alpineroads discriptions are very personal-nothing wrong with that at all as long as you realise that is what they are. I know from experience here that 10 bikers can ride the same route and come back with 10 different opinions of the route. And a good thing too, if we all liked exactly the same thing all those places would be over run.

So use such things as alpineroads by all means, just remember that this is just one persons opinion and that other opinions are equally valid.

Splugen = Great pass :thumb2

Though it's really hard to find a duff one.

My thoughts, the 50 odd I have done have nearly all knocked spots of the very best stretches of UK roads, and most have way surpassed anything available at home.

Some have awesome scenery, others are just wonders of engineering or determination over geography, many are fantastic for most riders, others suit a certain pace or style of bike better than others.

None have left me wishing I was back home riding the congested roads of southern England.

I would never rate a pass on a 1-x basis.

The Stelvio is a victim of its own fame, most people want to tick it off a list, and it may dissapoint, but best to judge for yourself.

The Splugen has a fearsome reputation for the Italian sides numerous tight hairpins - but with that comes the most amazing road I have experienced in the Alps, it just goes straight up (or down) a vertical cliff.

Neither are much fun if you want to keep your R6 spinning to the redline and wear out some knee sliders, but surely any road with loads of corners, little traffic and beautiful scenery has to be good when your on holiday with nothing to do but ride your motorcycle.

If you want a flowing ride try the Fluella, the Splugen is the stunning one, least fun for blasting along, but most impressive and I feel very happy I took the time to ride it and for something in between try the Albula, if your in a major hurry use the Julier (Still amazing and better than any UK road I know of) - or do as we did and spend enough time to ride the lot :D

Best leave her at home then :D

Many roads have big drops, few have barriers.

From memory the only one I really remember for making me ride like an old woman was parts of the Petite Saint Bernard as it was reasonably flowing in parts but the road edge was also the cliff edge.

I dunno why the human brain seems to think the more typical 12 inches of verge will stop you going for a bungie jump (wihout the bungie) if you misjudge a corner :nenau

Hi Cooperman, I too suffer with vertigo and look out and less down, when looking down always have something to hold onto.
The Splugen done either way is a fantastic pass and what a feat of engineering. Have run it 4 times once with a passenger and Pegasus wheel that needed a new tube and tyre sourced in Chiavena I think .Now that did feel a little hairy. Go for it.
