Lamp Fault with HIDs

So having fitted HID's to dip and main beam, together with an LED pilot bulb, I'm now getting the warning triangle and the LAMP warning. When it did this before I put a new LED pilot bulb in and all was well. Not this time, changed the LED and the warnings stayed on.
The man at Cooper Tunbridge Wells said that this can sometimes happen with the HIDs as the CanBus system reads the lower power take up, 35watt against 55watt for the standard halogen lights, as a fault.
Anyone had this problem? Is he right about it? (and) any suggestions as to how I can get the warning switched off 'cos it is fecking annoying.

i think i read somewhere about dipped beam being canbus,where as full beam isn't.
There again i might of imagined that
some cleffer dickie will be along soon,with a sensible answer,which might be handy as i have HID's ready to go on over winter 35W units...........

Must be either your full beam or your pilot coz I have had HID on main beam for a couple of years without any problems (touch wood !)

But is it 55W or 35W?

I had a 35 W HID on dipped beam on the 1200 and kept getting LAMPF and it shut the bulb down. Changed to a 55W HID which has run perfectly for the last 2 years or so.

I think it may have more to do with the make of unit and the slightly different amounts of current they may draw I've had a Bosch 35w HID on my 1200 for several years and just replaced it with a no name Chinese 35w unit and neither has caused a problem with LAMPF warnings.

it also depends what year your bike is. later models are more sensitive & may require different HID kits. i think a 35w HID is more likely to be a problem as the bike's ECU is expecting a 55W draw.

both dip and main are canbus, but because dip is switched on at startup, this is the one that causes the LAMPF warning.

had an 07 + 55W HID - no problem

current 11 model needed a later kit from Les to sort frequent LAMPF issue after swapping the HIDs over from the old bike.

Pilot Bulb?

Hello Peeps,
Just been talking to my mate Daren who fitted the HIDs for me and he says that the pilot bulb is part of the CanBus wiring.
He guarantees that the HIDs are CanBus compatible 'cos that's what he got, and double checked when they were delivered to him.
So the question is: is the LED pilot bulb I've put in CanBus compatible?
Umm...don't know - but I'll be checking as soon as I get home tonight.
This could be the same problem Ratchatcher has.
I'll keep you posted.

Gus you will find if you fit a 35 watt hid the computer thinks the bulbs blown and indicates it so you can get round this by fitting a 55 watt hid (the bulb stays the same and is just a ballast change) or you can fit a in line ballast (large capacitor) to fool the computer into thinking it has the correct bulb in there.

All very simple really once you have your head round it. Just find a nice place to hide the ballasts that all I ask.

Hi my 1200gsa, 61 plate has Hids fitted every now and then main beam goes lampf turn ign off and back on restart engine sorts problem out its a small incon for the gains (35 watt) i think!

Mine intermitently has this problem. Sometimes the headlamp works, sometimes it does not. Usually i can just switch the ignition on and off and it fixes itself.

Okay so I have now changed the LED pilot bulb back to a normal one and...the fault warnings are gone!
Huzzah!!
So the original LED bulb my mechanic put in was system compatible but when it stopped working I replaced it with one that isn't.
Only down side to this is that the normal bulb looks very yellow compared to the HID / LED combo. So now I'm on the hunt for where I can get a CanBus compatible LED pilot bulb.
If I can't find one in any of the car accessory shops round here I expect Fleabay will be getting a look.
So when you fit your HIDs leave the pilot bulb standard - or at least make sure your putting the right LED in it.

Question for Mark71:
What kind of paint job is that on the bike in your photo? Not being able to see it properly with it being so small is a given, but it looks 'orrible.
Just my opinion, mind.

I had the same problem and mentioned it to BMW when I had the bike serviced.
It is caused because the HID starts up slowly and the canbus sometimes nisses it.
I did find though that the plug from the canbus to the HID was a bit loose, clamped that up a bit and the problem seems to have gone away.
