Land's End Trial 2013

C is the full event whereas O is a cut down route. I've changed to C. :thumb2

did you change to C online - I've emailed them as I could not see how to do it online.

General Q:

Do people take a foot pump and let the pressure right down for the sections or just run quite low for the whole route (something like 18 PSI)

Go to the members area and login. On the member services home page click on event entry. Lands end trial is the only one there. Just click through and amend your entry. :thumb2

Gaz, I'd be interested to hear the response re. Mt21's. I am running with the T63's as I thought there was a continuous gap along the width of the Mt21 (going from memory and blurry photos)

Hi all
I have done the exeter and lands end a few times
In 2012 I did them on my 990
Exeter was too tough but lands end hugely enjoyable
You can use a tkc mefo super explorer or mT 43 but not mT 21 as tread 'slot" goes across the tyre
Muz mc on here is font of all knowledge so search his last year thread

do we need a rolling roadbook or can you get by with a tank/map bag and followimg others?

I have gone for one of these as a cheapo option but now need to figure a trip meter solution.
That said I also plan to follow wherever possible..........

It's all alot more involved than I first thought...... Shouldn't have been so hasty to sign up without checking it out thoroughly first. Oh well, should be a laugh :thumb

If you have a smartphone check out the rally apps by ASE. Their simplest solution looks to be the rally monitor 110. The only potential issue is it relies on a GPS signal.

Ian/Pinkytiff
what tyres did you use when you did it on your XChs?

I've got a choice of Mitas CO2/C19, Pirelli MT21s or Metzeler Saharas.

I guess the Mitas are too aggressive, and the Metz too road-ish, so will opt for the MT21 which have a similar pattern to Michelin T63 (which are explicitly allowed).

cheers
G

In the Exeter this year I used Pirelli MT43s. In the past I've used TKC80s.

I would double check on the MT21 that they're 'compliant' with the regs.

On 'the other option'... I have the same range issue!

In past LEs that I've ridden on a Beta Alp 200 (fuel capacity ~6.8L), I've never even run onto reserve. Hard to say what range is required until the route is published, but in the past there have been at least 5 fuel stops after Bridgwater.

I used to (lazy I know) follow a mate round with something like a tank bag (Cycoactive Bar Pack) as back up. This is fine unless you get split up. If you don't have an illuminated roadbook then it's a case of reading and memorising and riding bit of the route and so on.

I've seen a few of those used on the events.

I only use the tripmeter as an approximate measure. You soon get used to navigating by the routebook.

There is a bit of work to do to prepare, but not much more than for trail riding.

It should indeed be a laugh. I nearly always get a 'never again' at about 3a.m. but sure enough when the regs come out for the next one, off they go...

ACU license has arrived
Class changed to 'C'
Watched the YouTube clips
Thinking map bag on the tank and a head tourch on my wrist
Must be ready :-)

I see taht all the hills have a map reference do people put these into a GPS as a route ? - (As a back up )

Sorry JB, but that above does not follow from the regs

"In addition competitors in class C ONLY will be permitted to
use either Continental TKC 80 tyres or Michelin T63 tyres."

means that TKC and T63 are allowable exceptions, in addition to other makes not named that may fall within the regs.

IIIRC I think I had a CO2, definitely not a TKC or a Michelin.

Totally confused on what tyres I can use now. :nenau I've bought a new T63 for the front and have a well used TKC for the rear if required. But I'd much rather stick with my Karoos if they're going to be allowed.

Am i understanding this correctly - If the regs simply state no continuous gap across the tyre you are using, are the T63 and TKC the only exceptions to that rule as they DO have a continuous gap?

T63's

I think that's it Dansin. My understanding: the tyres you use must conform to the regs, with the exception of class C (and maybe class O over 450cc) where the tyres must either conform to the regs or be TKCs or T63s.

I believe the main reason for this is that it's difficult to get a 17" trials tyre.

That was my interpretation too

Trials tyres are the norm, for LDT's and MCC events, they have been for 50 years, mainly because they cause less damage to the lanes

Big bikes with 17" rear wheels could use either a TKC or T63 only to qualify for an award, should you win one

You could use another make of tyre (not a TKC or T63) on a big bike >600cc, but it would be at the scrutineer's discretion, on the day and you may be turned away and then, if not on a trials tyre, TKC or T63 you won't be eligible for the awards

I would stick to the tyres they specify specifically, just to be on the safe side

What do you use to hold the routebook?

I have a RB-TT, from a previous life. Not the cheapest option, but it works. I had it re-conditioned by David Lambeth who fitted metal cogs to it after the teeth came off the OE cogs. I think David may be able to supply re-conditioned RB-TTs.

Cheers,

Ian.

And because the best tyre for a trial is, erm, a trials tyre :thumb

IMHO of course (not wanting to start a tyre debate).
